Do you keep money on hand for emergency vet visits? You can choose more than one option

  • No - don't see a need.

  • No but I'd like to do this...how?

  • We use insurance for our pets

  • Of course - at least $40

  • We keep between $40 and $100

  • We keep up to $500 for hospital stay, etc.

I've been very, very fortunate with my guys. In the past 3+ years I can count the number of trips to the vet on two hands (including speuters). Needless to say, my guys are pretty darn hardy! :D Though with them aging, I expect that aging related health issues are quite possible, so I'm prepared for that.

So I clicked "no need" since if it were to occur, I can always access the funds in savings for any medical bills. But now that most of that is going to purchase a car soon, I'll have a job by then and I'll start putting 20% of my paycheck into the rabbit fund.

Marry your vet..

I'm just sayin...:p

LOL! I like that answer :biggrin2:

I have been pretty lucky when it comes to paying vet bills. The vets that I use for my animals (rabbit/guinea pig, dog/cat, horse) have all been really good about letting me make paymentsin anemergency. Of course, all routine stuff needs to be paid at the time of visit.

Ideally, I would like to have either about $800 in cash or a credit card to be used only for vet emergency purposes. At the moment I have neither...

It's funny that you post this right now. We're actually in the process of building one. We haven't yet had the need to have one, as our income was sufficient enough before October that we were able to just pay for anything that came our way, problem-wise (a good example was when all nine buns got ear mites, and we were not only able to get one checked out, but also treat all with what income we had come in at that time, or being able to take in a couple of them just on the suspicion something was wrong). However, given that our income has gone significantly down for us (though that's finally improving), we're having to confront putting away a certain percentage of our income (which for right now, we've set at about 5% so we don't shoot ourselves in the foot at the same time), and continuing to build that amount until we reach our goal (which we've set at about $200/animal, so $1400 total).

I figure that we'll just keep building it up, even possibly beyond the $1400, just to be sure we'd be covered if we had to have any type of large procedure done on any of them, like surgery, or something along those lines. And in the future, we might raise the percentage we're saving out of income...but right now, we're just trying to at least get a base amount going. :)

Anyway, great timing! And GREAT idea to do! :D

We don't have an emergency fund yet. Every vet trip has been paid out of my chequing account. I want to set up a joint account with my sister for just the Rabbits, but that cant happen until she gets a stable job and can afford to pay me rent/living expenses :)

I do! Every paycheck, I put aside $50 for vets/emergency fund. It's proved to be quite the lifeline when Spank came down hard on stasis that one night.. and the other night when my place was on fire =P
