Hey, do you guys cut your bunny's hay before yougive it to them, or do you just give it to them the length it is whenyou get it out of the bale/bag? The strands I've been givingmy buns without cutting them are at times a foot long.

I ask because I see my buns at times taking out the long strands andeating the shorter ones. Of course, I also see them eatingthe fluffy little tops of the hay, too, and then eating the rest oncemost of those are eaten up. Lol...so it may just be thatthey're rooting out the tops first. (Little Flower reallydoes look like she's rooting around like a piggy, too...it's adorable!!)

So, is this just them rooting out the tops, or is this them prefering shorter strands, I wonder?

Do your buns eat the tops first, too? Do they root around for them like mine do?

Ultimately it's not a huge deal because when it comes down to it, theyeat most of the huge amount of hay I give them twice a day, so I knowthey're getting enough. I just want to find out if it'spreferable by bunnies to have shorter vs longer strands ofhay.

Thanks, guys!!

We cut our hay to about 3 inches long so it fits in Pebbles bowl.

We cut enough of it to last for 5 to 7 days, and we store it in a cardboard
box with a lid to cover it.
Pebbles won't eat thebrown stuff, but she will rootthrough the hay thinking the better stuff is on the bottom.:foreheadsmack:

Rainbows! :)

I buy oxbow hay in the big bags. The bunnies get the hay straight from the bag - no cutting.

i dont cut their hay unless im going to put it in their bowl..i usually just put it in the rollin the hay thing...

peapoo and petey eat the twiggy pieces first..and peapoo is the only one that will eat the leafy top parts:dunno

We leave our hay long because it's so funnywatching them trying to eat it (Like the pasta scene from The Lady andThe Tramp) But I do have some short cut special stuff that goes in thebordom buster!

i usually cut mine. i use oxbow, and here latelythe strands have been well over a foot long. my rabbits eat it betterif i cut it in half

When I take it out of the bag I just bend it soIt'll fit easier in the cage. Pebbles won't eat the brown bits? That'sPepsi's favourite part! Hehe
