Hi everyone!

New to the forum here as I have only recently acquired a gorgeous rabbit who was only here for a few days.....that was 4 weeks ago and he's settled into house-life brilliantly!!

Anyway, I haven't had rabbits for years and so much will have changed and been discovered so I'm keen to update my knowledge! :idea

First of all, is there a list on here somewhere of toxic foodstuffs so I know what not to give? :?

Second, the title of this post....I found Harry lapping up some spilt Alpro Soya milk the other day - he loves it! I don't drink cow's milk at all, but wondered if it is ok to let him have the Alpro on a regular basis? I'm not talking about filling his bottle with it, just a small lidfull occasionally.

He is going to the vet on Tuesday to be neutered - much to the relief of my poor cat who he has ben chasing round the house for the past 2 days! Can anyone recommend easy-on-the-stomach food to give him after the operation?

Ok, I think that's it for now.... Hope someone can help!

Thanks!

D-M

Rabbit.org has some lists of safe and toxic veggies. There are also many other lists out there that are easy to find. There are some plants that appear on different lists, so I would avoid those just to be safe.

I would not give milk of any kind to a rabbit that is past weaning. They can't digest it. I don't know about soya milk, but I would avoid it to be safe. You could give some fruit juice (no added sugar) if you want to give him a bit of a treat.

After surgery, it would be best to keep him on his normal diet as much as possible. Giving new foods would not be a good idea as that can add more issues. You should get some of the veggies that he really likes to encourage him to eat. Parsley is a good one that many rabbit will eat. If you don't give it now, you can try introducing it before the surgery. Make sure he has hay and pellets as well. If you are worried, you could pick up some stuff to force feed him, most rabbit vets should have something but crushed up pellets mixed with water can work.

Thank you Kate - I don't give milk to any of my animals so there's no worry about that!

Harry loves parsley but hardly ever touches carrots! Will stock up on his favourites.

Thanks again,

D-M

I would not feed soymilk to rabbits. Unless it is unsweeted, it is probably quite sugary. Soy is not an appropriate food to feed regularly to any grazing animal, and chances are her commercial feed already has more soy in it than it ought to anyways. Basically, a rabbit should be eating predominantly grass, and the further we deviate from that in selecting treats, the more likely there is to be health consequences.
