I am calling for all bunny lovers to support our petition to legalise house bunnies in QLD Australia. QLD is the only place in the world with such law. It's an old law and not based on scientific evidence. The government fails to recognise the difference between a house bunny and a wild hare. The law declares house rabbits as pest and they are treated as such under the law. Anyone caught with a pet rabbit (including desexed and microchipped) gets fined up to 44K and 6 months in prison, their buns are removed and killed. At the same time all other Australian states don't have prohibition and bunnies are allowed and loved by many households. When new QLD residents realise this regulation and heavy fines they dump their bunnies along the NSW border overflowing the shelters or letting the bunnies to die. Similarly, those who find themselves too far from the border or those who decided to keep their buns secretly for their children have no access to vet care. Bunnies with easily preventable infections die slow death.
It's an outdated law of political nature and contributes to animal cruelty. It's difficult to access the people interested in this topic therefore PLEASE follow, sign and spread this petition: https://www.facebook.com/Legalize-Pet-Rabbits-in-Queensland-197829120283160/
Much appreciated,
Maria
