My parents recently agreed to get me and my brother rabbits(14 and 18). We are so excited but we had a question about housing for them. We are getting a bonded pair of Flemish giants(after Covid-19). We have a large closet that is 7 ft by 12 ft and were planning on housing them there. The closet had no windows which causes some concern for us. We have read that they can be in low light areas and can see in the dark, but we wanted some more opinions on it. We do plan on having them free roam when they get used to their surroundings and the closet is in the middle of my house. Right outside there is plenty of sunlight. We don’t have any other free rooms and we want them to have space to run around if we can’t let them free on a day. We don’t want to leave the light on there at all times but are okay with putting a lamp there(bunny proofed) during the day. I’ve attached what their housing looks like. We are also putting carpet squares or a fleece blanket on the flooring for footing. If you have any other suggestions for my housing environment, they will be greatly appreciated.

Is my hay box too small?

Also I was wondering if we should name them walnut and chestnut bc they are brown and we named the hare in our backyard hazelnut :)

If they will most of the time being out and have acess to the house while also have a lamp during the day it will be okay. As long they aren't spending most of the day in a dark encloser. Because that encloser is quite small for two flemish giants living together in. I know that my previous doe only needed to jump 4 jumps in in a 9 ft encloser and she was on the other side. So it was not that much space for her compared to my other bunnies and flemish giants are twice her size.

You can have a better flooring like using foam mats or putting carpets. Bunnies will sometimes have hard time running on plain floor and can find it really scary.

You can have bit more toys in the encloser which they can chew on and jump up onto. Like a chair or shelf, that they can chew up if they want to and place a cat tunnel in it. My bunnies love running through their tunnels.

You can also fix a digging box, some bunnies love to dig and play with it.

Myself also want to get a flemish giant but don't have the space. So I'm getting a belgian hare instead but flemish and their huge ears are soo damn cute 😍

Thanks for the fast reply!! We have an extra enclosure that can be connected to this one and will eventually be removing it entirely to have free roam of the room(when not the whole house). I can extend it today to increase the size. They will really only be in the enclosure during night but I do agree with the size being a little small. I was thinking of putting a fleece blanket because I have one available rt now. Do you think carpet squares are better? These rabbits are prone to chewing play mats.. and regarding toys we ordered some chew toys on amazon yesterday. I emailed the rescue that has the rabbits about if they like to dig but got no reply yet.
Again thank you so much for replying!

Use fleece blankets if they are prone to chew matts. My bunnies aren’t prone to chewing what they have as a flooring, so I don’t need to worry.

It would be good making the enclosure larger, so they get more space ☺️

The hay box can be a bit small, it seem small in the picture, they eat a lot of hay but you will just need to fill up. You will be shock how much hay larger bunnies eat 🤣

Ok thanks! I can make or order a larger hay box for them!:) Enclosure will be extended soon.
:)
