Coat color genetics

I am just learning about coat color genetics, and I feel soooo confused!! I need some help..

I am hoping to figure out the coat color genotype of my rabbits, but after reading everything I can find, I realize I don't truly know what some of the color definitions are. I'm gonna post some pics of a rabbit with a written description of the coat, and see what you guys would call the color, and what his likely genotype would be.

here goes......this is BullBunny...tannish agouti color...uneven grey and tan belly/tail/eye rings/bottoms of feet (not around mouth or nostrils). Black ticking. Slate grey 2/3 of the hair shaft length, then yellowish, then black, and some have another band of tan. Black rims on the upper inner edge of the ears, and an orangey colored area between the ears and extending down the neck.

This rabbit is a chestnut agouti or just agouti if you are in the uk it falls in the A genotype

Can you post a photo of the belly surface as well as the color when you blow into the belly?

Chestnut agouti is the basic color, but I'm thinking he also might have the wideband gene and possibly might be a Sandy.

Chestnut agouti genotype is A_ B_ C_ D_ E_

Finally got some pics of his belly. Hope they came out ok, but I had to do it by myself, and he didn't appreciate it much!

Interesting - you appear to have the "wide band" version of chestnut agouti - also known as "Sandy". Normal chestnut agouti agoutis have light belly surface color.

BlueGiants--I don't know his background. I bought him from a man who was closing his rabbitry and this was a young buck that had proven himself. He has that long shape tho. I would guesstimate his weight around 8 pounds or so. He has heavy bone structure (thick feet and legs, large head) and he has a lot of loose skin. When he stands upright, the fur almost puddles around his hips. Dense fur with a feel like my American Chins, but the Chins are a good bit bigger than he is. And he is very calm, and gentle and careful with his does.

So what could I expect from a cross between my wideband chestnut agouti and a chin?

pamnock---would the blanks in the genotype (A_B_ etc) mean the other allele cannot be identified ? Meaning we know he is A on at least one allele but the other could be A, a, or at? I may have some photos of some of his offspring....maybe we can use those to narrow down the other alleles??

Yes - the blanks represent the unknowns, and photos of the offspring could help to fill in those blanks
