Chase had a bladder stone removed in October of this year. This morning I was cleaning and I noticed blood on the carpet. I know it was from her she was the only one in that spot this morning. Their litter is dark so I wouldn't have noticed it on there. I don't know what to do. I thought he had gotten through his problems. He is acting fine, eat, drinking and running around. Do you think he can wait to go to the vet on Monday? I tried to call this morning and they are already closed.

Ok I picked Chase up and looked and there is still a little bit of blood on her white fur from where she went to the bathroom.

I also called the vet back and listened to the whole message and you can page the doctor until 10 tonight so I did that.

Sorry I am all over the place. I just don't have a lot of medical knowledge about animals and it freaks me out.

Thanks

Is it that the urine is red, or is it clearly blood clots in the urine? That might be a stupid question, but the two can be confused and sometimes it is worth qualifying :)

How is he acting in himself? Eating? Pooing? Drinking? Lively? Alert?

That is not a stupid question at all. It is red urine, no blood clots. It reminds me of tomato soup a little watered down.

She is acting normal eating andrunning around

Rabits urine can be red if they have eaten certain foods. I believe dandelion can do it, carrots, and other things too. What has she eaten in the last 24 hours?

She had her regular timothy hay. For dinner last night her greens were cilantro, water cress, green leaf and endive. Nothing that she doesn't normally get.

I read an article on the house rabbit society websiteand it sad red urine can be normal and is not a medical problem. With her past history though it really scares me.

I believe that blood shows up as clots, in urine, and so if it is red all over then chances are it is due to something in the diet. However, if your gut instinct is telling you to get him checked out then trust yourself and get him checked.

I know Smitten will pee Red at times. I posted pictures of her urine on the board because it looked unusual. It was looked like it neon orange color. I'm sure it is from what she has eaten.Dandelion leaf is her favorite green.

I am going to try and post pictures. I have never posted pics so I apologize if they are too big.

If they can have red urine and it is normal how do you know when to be concerned?

Hmm yeah thats difficult to say from the photo. Ive had bunnies have pee like that and it wasnt blood. I can see how you would be concerned though if shes had problems in the past.

Can you maybe get some white carefresh to put in her litterbox so you can keep an eye on it? I would limit her diet so you can moniter her output- maybe just pellets and hay and green leaf lettuce today?

The fact thatshes not straining to urinateor appearing to be in pain makes me feel better about it.

Her pain tolerance scares me. When she had a bladder stone that took up almost her whole bladder she never really stopped eating or running around. They couldn't believe she had not lost any weight because she had to have been in pain.

That is a great idea about the white carefresh. I will go get some of that today. Thanks

If you paged the vet then he should call back.

I had a guinea pig female that had a huge bladder stone. There were so symptoms until she started peeing blood. It was bright red blood , didn't look orangeish like Chases's. She didn't look like she was in pain either. I had it removed and it never occurred again.

because of Chases's history it very well could be bladder related but to be honest if

Chase is behaving normal..then I would just wait until the vet called and try not to freak out.
Smitten"s pic looked more like blood than this; I still remember it.

Thanks angieluv

The vet called back and it wasn't the normal vet I see so I don't know how much he knows about rabbits. He said that Chase should be fine until Monday. He is going to call me back to make an appointment. So I guess I will see on Monday. I am assuming they will have to take a urine sample right? I am just hoping nothing is wrong. Both of my buns have bladder issues I keep doing everything I can to try to make it better. I will be really devastated if this is another bladder issue for Chase.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

My about one year old rabbit, Coco, seems to sometimes pee extremely red urine. I can never quite figure out what plants trigger it and since she grazes in the garden I have no chance getting to the bottom of it. Although I should be used to her occasional red pee the other day I came home in the evening (it was dark and the hutch area was only dimly lit) and I saw reddish glistening liquid outside the bars of the hutch. I first freaked thinking the rabbits had been injured but couldn't find any wounds. When I checked the died stuff in the morning I reckognized it was urine because it had left whitish stains on the outside when drying. That might be a way of telling the difference. Let her pee on a smooth surface and look at it again when it's dried off. I am sure if it was blood it would seperate and dry differently. But better to check with a vet anyhow

angieluv is it possible she could have gotten another bladder stone in 3 months? That seems so soon.

Sabine, Thanks I hope it is normal. It is nice to know other people's buns have had dark urine and it wasn't blood. I will see if I can get her to go on a hard surface and see if it gets white around the edges. It will atleast give me something else to tell the vet to help her determine what it is.
