Hi everyone :).

I phoned about a2 year old (to my knowledge)rabbit yesterday from the SPCA. I talked with someone from the SPCA, but I'm not sure if she was knowledgeable about rabbits because she said that the one I phoned about hashad a vasectomy? Apparently one of his testicles never dropped, so they had to do a whole different operation. Is that common?

I'm also worried since it will most likely be as a friend for Pebbles, if having the vasectomy (if he did) he will still have the hormones making him hard to bond to because of the mounting and territory aggression? I always thought if the testicle didn't descend, they would just go in through the abdomen? Is that a possibility if he does become too hormonal?

Over the phone she said that he loves other bunnies, but don't know at all if he's ever had anything more than a meet with them.

Thanks :).

well, It would seem that would be a neuter, but maybe they had the vasectomy so he could still be shown. That's weird.

That's odd. I've heard of rabbits whose testicles hadn't dropped completely, but usually when they get neutered the vet still takes the whole testicle out. It's just more like a spay, since they have to cut into the abdomen. But I suppose a vasectomy is possible if the vet wasn't comfortable with doing the full surgery, especially if they weren't rabbit savvy.

Can't hurt to introduce them and see how he acts. Is this the astrex, by any chance?

Thanks for the info guys!

Yeah, I wasn't sure either. Never heard of it :?. I would guess that he went to Dr. Upjohn and Dr. Stockly since they arevery close by and areFANTASTIC rabbit vets (both the girls were spayed by them). Will just see how he acts, even if he still has his hormones, they said he's a very laid back and friendly, so it might not be a problem.

Yes, it is Mr. Yoyo the astrex! :)

I'd never heard of bunny vasectomies, either! How common is testicular cancer in rabbits? I'd think neutering would be better because then there aren't any testicles to get cancer.

Can't wait to hear how Yoyo does with Pebbles, I'm still just so relieved that he's not going to be snake food  And that if you adopt him, I get to see lots of Yoyo photos and stories! That little boy has me smitten.

oh yay!!! i'm so glad to hear yoyo got a good home!! i was worried about him, and he's so unique and beautiful.

no idea about the procedure though...

I'm wondering if maybe he just had the abdominal surgery to remove a pesky undecended testi? BunBun had this for his right one. They didn't even tell me until I asked, after seeing where they cut into him and the amount of stitches. Maybe the person at the SPCA used the wrong terminology or something?

He sounds like such a nice calm rabbit anyway so I don't think he has any issues because of it.

:highfive:

Oooooooooooooh, another bunny.

Sky had his taken out totally (his was undescended), but it was in an accessible place. My vet said sometimes they can be attached to organs it would be dangerous to remove them from, so maybe this is the case? He is far more likely to get testicular cancer now though because it will be at a higher temp inside (although, actually, does that still apply is it is a non functioning one? I don't know, might be worth finding out about).

Good luck with him though. Let us know if you get him or not :D
