I leave on May 5th for my mom's in Northern Maine ... I bought my tickets off Orbitz. I just got an email from them letting me know that Continental has put a new rule in place - starting May 5th (on ticket purchases made after 4/5)....that to check a 2nd item of baggage there is now a $25 fee. It seems like I can pay when I check the bag...

Sheesh.

I don't know - it just seems like its always been "2 free checked bags" for as long as I can remember (not that I fly much).

I was planning on traveling light anyway but I was hoping to bring back some of mom's china teacups (that I loved as a kid)....she wants me to take them now. Not sure what I will do.....I'll have to think on that. Of course, I was going to pack them really well....I may just ship them back.

Anyway - I thought I'd let y'all know this for anyone planning a flight on Continental....

This doesn't surprise me considering what's going on with the airlines and gas prices. They are trying to find ways to get more money besides raising ticket prices:rollseyes. Wonder if any of the other airlines are doing that as well?

Do you plan to carry on a bag as well? If not, you could carry one on back, they should allow that.

I hope you have fun at your mom's sounds like a nice getaway!

I have been so depressed over the last few days - sleeping more than usual - really ready to snap at people, etc. I've been trying to work through some of it - and a large part of the depression comes from something that happened a few weeks ago that just really soured me on life and people in general. I find I'm becoming cynical and angry and bitter....something I don't like being. Art & I are talking about it some...trying to come to some resolution but I may actually wind up talking to my doctor in May about going back in for counseling (and getting the military to pay for it since Art is retired military). A lot of it is from thinking I've forgiven (trying to forgive) and then things happening time and again and its like....rubbing sand in the wound.

HOWEVER...and the part I'm leading up to....about 20-25% of the depression comes from this upcoming trip.

I am NOT looking forward to it.....at all.

First of all - I love my adopted mom - but she is 80 years old and we can have a 90 minute conversation on the phone and she repeats herself like 5 times within half an hour (or less).

In addition - I've never been "good enough" to please her - whether it was my style of clothing - my lack of makeup - my hair color - my hairstyle, etc. She quite literally "dressed" me till I graduated from high school (I was allowed very little input into my clothes)....

So I'm just so THRILLED to be going home.....NOT.

Normally I go for two weeks - this time I'm going for 7 days...well...almost 8 days. I am hoping I won't be stir crazy by the time I get back to Texas....I swear I'll probably get off the plane and want to kiss the ground to make it back (in spite of the heat).

I say all this to say...I'm not overly thrilled to be going home. It WAS my idea - after all - mom turned 80 last month and I will be there for Mother's Day (I was supposed to go for her birthday but we were afraid of snow even the first week of April 'cause they got so much).

So having Continental pull this....well.....I don't know.

I guess I was already aggravated about people and life in general...and it just added to the aggravation - know what I mean?

I mainly wanted to get the information out there so that anyone who is thinking of flying - would know this BEFORE buying tickets w/ Continental....and you may want to check it on other airlines too...I know Art is supposedly flying Southwest to see his mom and dad at the end of June...but he packs light and it will only be for 5 days..

Aw, Peg. Now that you go into detail, I recall you speaking of your mother. I'm so sorry things have been so difficult lately and that you're not looking forward to it. I can totally understand. So, I'm sending a huge . At least try to enjoy the weather, I hope it's nice when you get there. That can be calming.

I hope things will look up for you soon in the depression department as well, that has to be hard. Thank the Lord you have that wonderful, awesome, sweetheart, Art! Gosh, he's a Godsend!;)

Yeah, I can understand your aggrevation of Continental, just more bull to deal with...Arg. I hope the flight itself is decent. Wouldn't want you going off on some poor soul, haha.
