Hello all! This is my first post, I am new here. I have been checking into getting some rabbits for meat and show. I have done quite a bit of research, and have decided to start with, and hopefully stay with Californians.

I am looking for a top bloodline/breeder who can help me obtain my starting stock. Pedigree, papers and show quality.

As I would also like to take my daughter and do some shows, as I get going.

I have been getting everything ready to aquire a starting stock of four. I am leaning towards 2 does, one a senior and 2 young bucks as well.

I have 4 cages, all four are 30 x 36" and I am going to be building a large wooden shed / leantoo and will be hanging my cages, and adding a couple grow out cages. I wont be selling, not that I know of, mainly just trying to develop nicer and nicer animals, while the rest will be either in the freezer, crock pot, or any number of healthy dishes.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of a breeder who has like top top notch animals, and is willing to ship? I dont mind paying whatever it is going to cost for premium animals, along with shipping etc.

Thank you all in advance for bearing with me as I ramble on.

Dave

Im no breeder, so based off what i know. Start with a good trio. Go to a rabbit show and see what breed you like. Talk to breeders, too. Californians are very common so youll be up against more than some other breeds at shows so you will have to have good stock which will take awhile to get the hang of andnlearn it all.

P.s. we dont talk bout meat rabbits here, and can lead to people getting upset over subject.

I love my rabbits, don't get me wrong, but I don't get offended when people talk about eating rabbits. I understand why some people do, but I wouldn't personally turn someone away from the forum because of it.

I have rabbits as strictly pets, but I've eaten rabbit.

2 of my good friends breed for show and meat; I think if humane practices are kept then I don't have any issue with it. When I think about how awful cows and chickens are kept in the mass consumer society, it makes me appreciate the animals who are raised without any idea of what's coming. Happy, healthy and ignorant makes a big difference to me when raising animals for food.

Just my personal opinion.

I'm not sure of any breeders in Iowa, but you might have some luck googling around or checking Craigslist. A lot of top breeders sell their buns in the Farm & Garden section of Craigslist.com.

I'd rather have someone like you come here to learn, than set off ignorant and risking inhumane treatment!

:)

No worries.

Do a search for Californian Breeders in your area. Or even do a search for ARBA shows in your area and you and your daughter go to one. Definitely be able to talk to Californian breeders there.

Good Luck with your venture. And don't mind when rabbits are called "meat" because they are. Know many who feed their family in exactly the same fashion as you want and do it very successfully.

Californians are beautiful "meat" rabbits. Definitely a fine choice to start out with. But also nice are the Champainge's and Silver Foxes. Both "meat" rabbits but the colors are beautiful.

K:)
