Floppy was out playing, and seems to have cought his nail on something. At first I thought it was a cut on his toe, but after cleaning it it seems to be where his nail connects. It was all the way around the nail.It was not a large amount of blood and stopped bleeding quickly. I am concerned that he may have injured the nail and if I should take him to the vet?

For those of you who do not know, Floppy has a crooked back leg:

It is the outside nail on this leg, so he somehow cought it on something. I did not think to take a photo of it. The nail does not appear to be detatched or anything. Anyone else ever have this happen? What should I do? I'm watching him closely to be sure it does not start bleeding again.. While cleaning it, I did trim his nails also, they were a tad long.

If he injured the nail, it should heal. As long as it isn't bleeding or "hanging", and there is nothing to get caught on, I would say he'll be fine. There isn't much a vet can do, unless it needs further trimming, or it continues to bleed.

You're doing the right thing. Keep an eye on it and keep it clean and dry. If it's badly damaged, it may fall off and another will grow in.

I have not had that happen per say, but I did have Angel, who had one of those crooked back nails? Can't recall the name of the condition ( the nail curls backwards?). It's no biggie, just keep trimmed.;)

She also had one on the pinky toe, that was limp and was strange. It never bled, I could still trim it, so I didn't worry about it. Ang had onetoe , a pinky one that went to the right. I know, it doesn't add up. It was strange, like the tendon went along with it.:?

I would say just keep an eye on it so it doesn't get infected or look irritated. It should be fine. It sounds like the same thing Ang had on her last toe.

Yeah, Fiver just had that happen a week ago, and it took a few days before anything worrysome popped up. So yeah, just keep an eye on it...if it starts to look swollen, take him in.

Fiver's currently on some metacam and antibiotics from his cracked toenail.

Pipp had a nail partially pulled outat the base on a front paw, or at least it was bent, but there wasn't anything the vet could do. I had to keep it clean -- peroxide, but just dabbed around the edges, or betadine(?).

A few days later she waswashing her face and started doing afoot flick, and the thing wentwhizzing past my ear like a bullet. :scared:

Thank you for setting my mind at ease. I just checked on him and you can't even tell it happened looking at it now. I'll keep watch. He doesn't seem to be in pain, I think it's bothering me more than him. I hope he doesn't lose his nail.

Oh wow Sas! That's crazy! I really hope that doesn't happen...though it's comforting to know it's not a catastophic injury. Thanks for the input, I'll put peroxide on it now. I wasn't sure what was safe.

LOL, Sas!!! Nice...

I would've liked to have seen that.

And yeah, the vet told me that if his nail falls off, a new one will grow back in (might be different than his others, but it'll grow in).

Interesting, huh?

As long as the nail bed (below the skin) isn't damaged, a new nail will grow back. The nail can grow back a different color. If it is damaged, the nail will not regenerate, but (as long as it isn't infected) that's one less nail to trim!

It is interesting. I didn't know they could grow back a differant color. I always thought it was funny that my dog had differant colored nails. Some black some clear/white.

Maisie's got different colors of nails, but not from them breaking. She's got some white, and some black...I just think with her, it's the chinchilla color coming out in her nails, hehe! :)
