Brian Hartzell

I heard the sad news today that ARBA Judge Brian Hartzell of Ohio passed away. It's a terrible shock - he was an awesome young man and will be missed.

I was so shocked to hear this today. I'm still not even sure what to think.

The rabbit world has suffered a huge loss today.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOW?!?!?! I just saw him a few months ago at a show and he judged some of my woolies! Wow... wow. That's crazy and he was a really great guy...he will definatly be missed.

We heard it was a Brain Aneurysm... very sudden....such a loss....

I don't think anyone knows exactly why at this time. Rumors of a massive heart attack or an aneurysm were floating around. What is known is that Brian was driving to work, the driver behind him noted that Brian's car began to swerve. Brian pulled over, and by the time the other motorist pulled in behind him to assist, Brian had died.

He had been judging at a show on Sunday, and was reported to be in very good spirits and looked well.

I always enjoyed judging with him and talking to him. Brian was one of my examining judges when I got my judges license. He was really pulling for me and has always been very helpful when I've had questions.

His rabbits were stellar. It was a dream to be able to handle his top animals - nothing compared to the coats on his woolies and fuzzies. Brian also had a wonderful sense of humor - he put a stuffed rabbit up on the table once for me to judge.

This is such a terrible loss - I'm still in disbelief that he is gone.

Pam says it well as it's a terrible loss.

This one seems more difficult to handle not only because he was young, but he resided in the county next door. I stay in contact with youth from his county in which he was a 4-H advisor. My best youth hugging buddy just saw Brian Sunday night through a rabbit transport and is close knitted with Brian's family. That's the hardest part about all of this is having multiple youth buddies with direct contact to Brian and hearing their hurt.

His local club's show is June 20th in Troy, Ohio in which he was to judgeand now profits are going to a scholarship in his memory.I believe it was last year or the yearbefore (years running together!) Brian was caught judging in food booth attire at his local show. What a sight to see, hair net and all!

Seriously, though, it's the fun memories like these that get you through the hard part of losing someone you care about.

At the National Jersey Wooly show a few months ago, we had a basketauction. There was a basket that only the youth could bid on and the bids ended up going past the $200 mark. A couple of the adult members were helping fund the youths in their bidding. One child was told that if she went and gave Brian a nice smile and a hug that Brianwould becomeher "banker". She did this andBrian graciously donated money towardsher bidding.

He was such an amazing guy to the youth as well as the adults. I last saw him that weekend at Nationals and I am sorry that there will be no more of these times. Rest in Peace Brian and thank you for everything you have done.
