Breeding Rabbit

Im currently in the process of breeding my rabbits... the female is 7mths while the male is 8 mths..

So ive researched fully about everything... only 1 thing im confused...

Ive read on the net that it is recommended to watch the rabbit while they are mating.. the thing im so clueless is.. they say that put the doe into buck cage, allow the mating process at least 2-3 times... then remove the doe and put her back in the buck cage after an hour...

and then let them mate again for 2-3 times, remove the doe and put her back in the buck cage after 6 hours??

what i dont understand... why dont we just leave them together for 12 hours max? and why we put her after 1 hour then put her again next after 6 hours? and my final question.. how many times should we separate and put the doe back and within how many hours can this process be repeated... i hope im making sense here cause i got different answers which does not satisfy me on the internet...

Scientific studies have indicated that for optimal conception rates, the buck should be put back with the doe 1 hour after the first breeding.

This should probably be moved into the rabbitry and show room thread so you would hopefully get more answers. But to help you with reasons.

Always put the doe in the buck cage: i know you didnt ask this but i feel the need to share it. Does are very territorial and will be protective of their home if they ever felt threatened and selective breeding can make them feel very threatened. Also the buck can become very distracted in a new cage.
As pam and other people i know said does will start producing ova after being "stimulated" and this usually occurs an hour after the first breeding. There are complications if you just leave the doe in the bucks cage first off there is safety. If you have a doe that shows no sign of aggression then this might be an option but if you dont want an injured buck then don't leave them together unsupervised. Also this doesn't guarantee that the buck bred the doe. It is highly likely but you aren't sure of how many times or even if he did it properly. With that said we have done this with our californians from FFA. I could not get these two to breed for the life of me all they wanted to do was cuddle So we left them together for two nights and a month later she had 6 beautiful babies so it is not unheard of.

I can also tell you what I do. I check the does vulva for color. Light pink means she probably won't be willing and dark red means shes ready. I then proceed to put the doe in and supervise. Once the buck has actually gotten her around 3 times (this is seen by him grunting and falling over) I take her out and hold her upside down back to her cage let her sit there and rest then repeat the breeding three more times. Hopefully to make things easier the doe will rear (as in lift her rear for the buck to penetrate) If she doesnt I will try to lift it for the buck and that is hard to explain with text but it definately comes with practice and depends on how the doe or buck reacts. Then I wait 32 days and on day 34 if no babies i try again.

Woah - thank you for ur post.. Im new here so i didnt know where better to put my post...

U said that you repeat the breeding 3 times..how many hours between those 3 times you separate them and wirhin how many hours this process should be finish?ive read that the process should be within 7 hours n some said 8 hours n some said all day..the answers are inconsistent..:S

I think its really up to you. When its up to me it depends on how fast the buck does his job. If he gets her in about 10minutes all three times then i may not wait a full hour. If the buck is really emotional about it or slow to where it takes him about 30minutes to do twice then ill remove the doe and let him get his stamina back which is when ill wait the full hour or maybe more. Then he'll usually be faster when i put the doe back in. I wouldnt ever let a breeding go on for more than 24hours all together. When we put the cals together we split them up during the day and put them together for the night(abt 8 hrs) As far as getting to the point where they might carry a second litter I am not sure about that someone else would have to reply.

But breeding should be a quick process and for me it usually is.

I sometimes haves to help the doe by holding her. And letting the buck do whatever. I also do table breeding and help. I also sit and wait until they do at least 4 breeding's and I take them out and they are done. (I have 2 litter's of 9) I also sometimes leave them in their over night.

Great thnks..i wont mind leaving them overnight but the scientifoc methods are said to be more effective and efficient than leVing them overnight.. But we'll see first..

you have to do what is best for you.


Have you check and see if she's ready. You can by touching her tail area. And see if she will lift her butt. Some people check the doe's, see if they are dark red/purple. Do they have a lot of lighting? How the weather? Breeding in winter months is the toughest to have babies and breeding. But I dont know how the weather is down by you or whatever..

the lifting she probably wont do since she is a younger doe and only thinks you are petting her. My REW brit reared only after I bred her for the first time.

If you do leave her overnight make sure to check for any agression for a good 30minutes or an hour or If the buck tries to breed her in that amount of time. If she shows any sign of being threatened and/or aggression then i would not recommend leaving her overnight.
