Testing it with your hands can be misleading as they tolerate much higher temperature than sensitive parts of your skin (like inside of wrist) Since the rabbits nose is very sensitive it may feel hotter. I usually let boiled water cool down in a very shallow bowl. It cools down really quick.

But the rabbit didn't flinch untill I added savlon?

Then I figure it must have cooled down sufficiently. Had it been too hot there surely would have been a reaction

I think that it's good that you are going to the vet; the vet can adequately cleanse the area and possibly place him on an antibiotic salve and systemic antbioitic if it is infected
in terms of the boiling water I sort of shuddered when I read this.

I was warming sterile saline in a plastic bottle (eye wash)when I was cleaning pus fromBeau's eye. I would run the bottle under hot water. then I would test the water on my arm.

He seemed to hate me to do this so I tested the water on my eye and it was way warmer feeling than when I tested it on my arm.

One has to be very very careful with boiling or hot water as that in itself will irritate an already irritated area

I'm sure that he will be fine but it's just taking awhile for it to get cleaned out properly and not being able to visualize it makes it harder.

I just wanted to say, that our vet has prescribed something called Fucidin cream for our buns before- Chalk had a fairly deep cut on her shoulder from a scuffle with Snowy aaaages ago. We were given something called hibiscrub to mix with lukewarm water and clean the wound (this is a safe antiseptic solution), and Fucidin cream to apply directly, thinly. Chalk's cut was healed within a matter of days with this treatment.

I haven't researched the Fucidin much, but just wanted to add that, in case those products are more widely available than US ones, although I believe the Fucidin is prescription-only, i.e you will have to get it from the vets.

I hope the bunny is ok!

It could possibly be infected, Because the black stuff didn't come off when I put the hot water to it. Is that a sign of infection?

When you say black stuff, do you mean a scab?

I'm far from an expert, but my Snowy had a scratch on her nose recently- it formed a little scab, then turned black and healed. It took a long while to heal, and for the fur to grow back, however it was not infected at all during that time- I was under the care of a vet at the time (because she had other medical problems) who checked out the cut. All we needed to do was bathe it with lukewarm water.

I think that you should definitely ask your vet if you aren't sure- it will put your mind at rest and you will know for sure if there is infection or not. Is there any way you could post a picture, so that people could advise you better?

i dont know much about infections but i would think it it was infected it would look swallon, red, puffy, puss? what do you mean by black stuff? is the black stuff not just dried blood i.e the scab? if its the scab then i wouldnt want it to come off as this will be the healing process of the scratch and the scab will be stopping infections getting in :?

im not sure which rabbit it is but if its the 2 that live together (sorry if they've been separated ive obviously missed that post) then id be in the thought that they were fighting and there could be more injuries under the fur it can be hard to see them sometimes. i know of two cases where a fight has occured between 2 rabbits and the owner hasnt known straight away about an open wound on their side until its become infected and abcessed. i remember a post about your mum letting your buns out together to run around so again a fight may have occured then unless this has stopped now.

Is the black stuff just dried scab. benny had that after his encounter with the guinea pig. It actually looked really black and hard and for a while I thought a claw was still stuck in it:(

My experience is the same as Jen's. As Benny was due his vaccinations the vet checked out his nose and confirmed it wasn't infected

Well The part of the nose that has the black hard stuff is kinda swollen. And he doesn't mind it being touched, I really don't no what it is. I hope it's not infected but I'm going to ask a vet to give us something just in case, and maybe just something to help him get through it. I wouldn't expect this to go over €400 because that is all I could afford for a vet trip? I don't know are if we are going to vet today or tomorrow, But I would hope to put up a pick first and then get your advise on weather or not I need the vet, Because if we go to the vet it would be coming out of the run fund(witch is the €400) but I know keeping my bunny alive is more important then a run. Should I get the betadine and use that?

Just checked and the nose was bleeding:nerves1. We booked him into the small animal specialist clinic at 2.30pm it.s 1.15pm now. I'm so worried. Please pray for my little bunny:pray:.

Well done for booking the appointment. I hope that the vet can help. Keep him as destressed as possible, and make sure you keep calm around him.

I'm frantic. Someone help:nerves1.

Did the bleeding start by itself or did it happen after cleaning. have you checked the inside of the cage/hutch if there's anything sharp pertruding. this can sometimes happen when they scratch the would and screws become exposed

Ok we brought the rabbit to the vet. It wasn't infected but it needs stitches. They might be keeping the rabbit in over night. So I hope everything goes ok. The vet did a general look over the rabbit, and said it was in brillent condision and It must get the best care possible. She wasn't completely sure how the cut could have been caused but either do I. It cost us €35 for the consulation and €50 for the operation, but she said there might be more charges. Please keep my rabbit in your prayers:pray:. This is the first animal we have ever had to bring to the vet. Oh And I think they registered the rabbit or something because they took all the details.

It started by itself.

Aw, poor bunny. You need to look at all the areas the bun goes in and work out if there is anything in there that could have done that to him.

Make sure you get some pain meds for after the operation too, because that will be sore :(

Well done for taking him to the vets :)
