I have a 3 year old neutered male REW mini x holland lop. For the last 18 months or so, we have been fairly religiously checking our local RSPCA to see if we can find a neutered female rescue to adopt, who might be a similar age to our boy. Unfortunately, they seem to get very few bunnies given up to them, and when they do they are adopted very quickly.
Over the weekend, we made the monthly pilgrimage across to the pet store to get a new mini bale of hay and some pellets. While we were there, we saw they had baby rabbits - nothing new, they often do at our pet store, and normally I am able to resist. However, one was a particularly gorgeous 8 week old dark eyed girl lop with a very pretty coat colour. This time, I absolutely couldn't walk out of the place without her, and so she came home with us.
What is the protocol with bunny age gaps like this? Ideally, I would like them to be able to live together, but I understand she will eventually go through adolescent hormonal-ness and even if they are living together happily for a while this could lead to trouble. Our boy has just gotten a new cage about a week ago, so I feel like it would be a good time to introduce a new bunny, since the cage probably doesn't feel quite like 'his' territory yet.
Is it best to keep them separated until after she is desexed? They have had a few short play sessions and there have been no signs at all of irritation or upset from either bunny.
