Rabbit food goes bad? I feed my buns a brand that is store specific, from a local feed store (Copley Feed Rabbit Pellets, I think) I switched Xenos to them when I moved here over a year ago, and I liked the ingredients and he loves them. I never thought that it could go bad... I bought him a 50lb bag about 4 months ago. I keep it in sealed plastic containers, and it looks and smells the same as it did when I got it, and he hasn't had any issues with it. How would I know if it was bad? :?
Yea, I am kind of confused by this too. Someone told me on here that you should throw your feed out after it's 3 months old (3 months from the mill date that is, not when you purchase it). But then I read above^ that I guess feed can stay good for a bit longer :?My feed is kept in a plastic container in my apt as well...I don't see how it could go bad. Now if it was kept outside or in a barn, then that's a different circumstance.

If it stays in a sealed plastic container where it can stay dry and fresh, then it shouldn't go bad. I feed Rangen. it come in a 50 lb bag but it only costs me $11-$12 and its really good quality

we bought a 20kg bag that ended up going bad... we could tell because it lost the smell, colour and taste that it once had (i always nibble on my pellets cause im a total weirdo). also my buns stopped eating it...

Yeah, if the rabbits stop eating it or you see a noticeable change in smell, color, or um...taste :)P), it's time to throw it out.

I try to feed all pellets within 3 months of the mill dated. But if I have a bag that ends up sitting for awhile or whatever, I just make sure it still smells and looks good and the rabbits eat it. If so, it should be ok.

Oxbow all the way. My bunnies don't lose hair at all and they are VERY healthy. They didn't like it first, but they had no choice but eating them because there was no food except Oxbow pellets. :)

I'm still looking for the best brand for Gus. He's on Martin's (again) and sheds like crazy. I mean, pick him up and POOF! And he's not molting at all. It's just an all-over shed. And his fur looks rough too. (Though it's VERY shiny!).

Honestly, I gotta agree with Julie (Oakridge) that if he's a good weight and healthy and happy, then don't mess with a good thing!

Well I made the decision to switch Wrangler over to Manna Pro Select Series: Pro Formula. It has a maxium of (21.00) of fiber. Not as much as Oxbow, but again, I just can't see myself paying for a very small bag of feed for $12. I mean how much does that last for just one bunny? I know that mine is a dwarf - and it might last him a month - but he's very energetic and eats a lot! So I just can't fathom buying it right now. Maybe in his senior years I will switch him over to Oxbow, but for now, he appears to be a very healthy bun.

A 10 pound bag lasts me about 10 weeks with 2 buns. They each get about 1/4 cup per day for a total of about 1/2 a cup per day. The bag costs me about $15, but there are other places around here that cost $20 or more. I buy the BB/T and the Alfalfa stuff is a bit cheaper.

If the food works for you and you bun, then stick with it. Feed store brands don't work for every rabbit and the same goes for pet store brands. If you find something that works for you, then use it. If it doesn't work, then try something else.

Wow a 10 pound bag for $15? That's not TOO bad. The bags they sell at the petstore are 5 lbs for $13!

I bought a 10 pound bag of oxbow BBT for 13 dollars on Dr. Fosters and Smith yesterday. It's much cheaper if you buy the bigger bags and get them online.
