Well, I haven't posted pictures of Benson since I saved him from being euthanized in April of this year. For those that don't remember/know his story...
Benson was living with a guy and his wife, they divorced and the wife moved to another state. The guy needed to move and sell his house and didn't think Benson would make the trip across country...so he was just going to have Benson put to sleep because he didn't think anyone would want an old bunny.
Well, I heard about all of this through one of my friends who owns a cleaning business and had been cleaning for the guy for quite a while. I talked with Ryan and immediately called my friend to tell the guy to not have him PTS and I will take him.
So, we went and picked up "Bugsy". What we saw was a very loved bunny....who was loved so much he was very obese. Benson was fed Kaytee "kibbles" pellets and all sorts of sugary treats. His owner didn't know much about rabbits at all.
I renamed him to "Benson", switched him to Oxbow BBT, and he receives no sugary treats at all now-a-days.
Benson was with his old owner for 7 1/2 years. All the old owner could tell me was that he adopted him from a rescue in the valley (PHX, AZ). I did research and it was found that Benson was adopted in May of 2001 from Brambley Hedge Rabbit Rescue by the guy and his wife.
The old owner broke the adoption contract, so legally Benson belonged to BHRR. I became Benson's official foster mommy through the rescue. Benson is a long-term foster, with little to no hope at all of getting adopted.
Here is Benson back in April of this year when I first got him...
Here is Benson as of yesterday ...
Benson is a Holland Lop, but is a little bit furrier, he is shedding now, too. He is also blind and has an eye infection now...that is why his fur is wet-looking around his eye...he is on ointment for this right now. Ben is also deaf. We go to a lot of vet appointments because of his eyes...they need regular tear duct flushing, he will be on meds for the rest of his life.
Sometimes I wonder about the quality of life Benson leads. He doesn't play with toys and doesn't enjoy out of cage time...he will beg to be let back in his cage. Benson's life consists of eating, sleeping, drinking water, and going potty.
I also wonder if his eyes hurt him. Our vet said there is no pressure in the eyes, as of a few months ago...but I wonder how painful the constant leaking of the eyes is. Our new vet, Dr. Batt, used to work with the House Rabbit Society in San Diego with their bunnies and was a speaker at Bunny Fest through the years.
