She has been in quarantined for a month at a friends house unknown to me and where there were no other rabbits except her and chinny. She has been home for a couple of days now and I noticed yesterday that she sneezes a lot and this morning had a thick white discharge in her nose. It was a small amount and not on her paws and her eyes are clean.. any thoughts on this? Chinny is fine. Jersey is in with my other rabbits and babies.

Thick white discharge would have me worried about Pastuerella. Has she been to the vet? I would keep her quarantined and get her to the vet for a culture. They should be able to give you some antibiotics based on that.

Should it not of shown up before this? hubby said she was fine, thats why he brought them home. He is feeling really bad that he might of brought me home a sick rabbit. He said he has not seen her sneez before yesterday, not have the people who were housing her for a month. He figured after a month everything was good.

It could just be something that has shown up recently. A lot of bunnies who have pastuerella in their systems can live normal healthy lives if treated. Sometimes stress can trigger it.

I wouldnt give up on her. Im sure it can be treated with some antibiotics.

I'll stop by the vets tommorrow, i have never been to him with an animal but hehas beenvery helpful with my questions about my hand fed babies and seems rabbit savey. I'll also move her tommorrow, she is right beside Blacky and babies.Would she be ok in the same shed but away from everyone else or should I put her somewhere far away?

I would probably put her in another room if you can. Also, be sure to wash your hands and such after you feed or pet her, just in case.

It could just be a slight respiratory infection, but its good to be careful not to let it spread.

PS. Is she eating and pooping normally?

Pasteurella is thought to travel veryfar airborne, although poor ventilation helps it along, but you don't know for sure wha titis, better to be safe.

Here's a quote from a commercial breeding site:

Pasteurella are basically transmitted through direct contact such as mother to progeny, male to female, or via a vehicle such as the drinker, the trough or the breeder's hands. These bacteria cannot live very long outside the body, making sanitary isolation effective.Airborne transmission is infrequent and only effective if the air is full of dust or water particles.

I would also worry about pasteurella. My rabbit had the exact symptoms when i brough her home and we sent outa culture and it came back positive for pasteurella. i would definitely take a trip to the vets and send out a culture of the nasal discharge. you can do a search for pasteurella here and get some good postings. i am currently treating Kahlua with baytril and echinacea. there is treatment but it is unfortunately a lifelong issue.

I don't think that its uncommon for a rabbit to have pasturella latently and to have flare-ups when under stress, or anything else that would weaken the immune system including old age or surgery.

My little sweetheart I Rainbow bridge) Jacques had blocked tear ducts a lot and it was thought to be mild flare-ups of pasturella.

I have my guy Ringo who has pasteurella and he is in the same room as my other buns. Air ventilation is good, he has all his own stuff.

the culture came back negative!! I'm so glad to hear this. She got a clean bill of health. The vet doesn't know why she sneezes so muchbut it's not becuase she is sick with anything. Every body is shedding, maybe the fine hair is nickling her nose or something.

Wow, great news! I would try to maybe shake out her litter and hay and food, it could just be allergies.

If her nose continue to run a lot, just watch her eating habits to be sure its not her teeth. Congrats though!
