Alopecia

Hi, Im new to this forum. I have a 1 year old female bun named Olivia. I didnt know what her breed is because I obtained who from a friend who could no longer keep her. Everyone here says she is a Rex. When I got her, I noticed a bald spot on her left shoulder. The vet said its Alopecia. Any suggestions on how I can get her hair to grow back? Thank you. the 2 pics I posted you can see the spot on her shoulder.

Buns can get bald patches when molting but if that is the case it will grow back .

if the patch gets bigger, is not smooth looks scaly etc your bun could have fur mites which is very common and easily treated with Revolution.
Did your vet address why your rabbit would have alopecia( hair loss) ?

No they never said why she had it...but they did say she didnt have mites or lice. I can see where some of the hair is starting to grow back, but its taking forever!

It can take some time for the fur to grow back all the way. Rabbit fur doesn't really grow all the time, so you may have to wait for her to moult for the fur to come back. It will probably grow back a bit, but you may not see full growth until she moults.

When do rabbits molt, or is it different for all of them?

Rabbits generally molt during seasonal changes. The bald spot over her left should isn't a normal molting pattern.

You should be seeing some dark fur coming in shortly.

She looks to be a large Mini Rex (the color is castor).

She has some fur coming in there and its the same color as all of her other fur. Right now, it looks as if she got a buzz cut there.

Moulting really depends on the rabbit. They will usually moult in the fall (growing the winter coat) and the spring (shedding the winter coat), but some will do it more often. The amount of daylight, temperature, diet, and age can affect when a rabbit will moult and how bad it will be. There are some rabbits who are almost in a constant moult and others who will barely moult.

Just saw on another post that she weighs about 9 lbs. As others have stated, she is a Rex : )

Molting varies from bunny to bunny but usually Spring and Fall with most of ours. We've had four Rexes and two of them get bald spots--nothing to worry about with ours either. Very nice looking Castor (color) Rex.

When my rabbit lost a patch of hair, not due to molting, it took awhile for the hair to grow back. When it was all back you couldn't tell she'd had a patch missing... my vet said since she was a young rabbit that's probably why no scar, but old rabbits could get scarring.

Willow (also a Rex) had a big bald spot behind her head on her neck and I thought it might be mites. I figured out it was from her husbun Wally over grooming her in that area, but the fur did eventually grow back just fine but it took a long time. And your bunny is really pretty :inlove:

Yea, I have co clue where she got it from. I know she wasnt with any other rabbits while my friend had her. He had her from the time she was 8 weeks old til 10 months old, then he gave her to me. Its starting to come back, just taking awhile...and thank you for the compliments
