EXACTLY! The back bone of my Mini Lop herd was a pair of littermate rabbits that came home to me from Ohio this past May.

I see no reason at all to even investigate AI in rabbits when it is SOOOOOO easy to either ship or find transport for a rabbit out of the lines that you want to work with from anywhere in the country or outside of the country even....

It seems like a HUGE waste of money to me....

I do have bucks that are worth using. They just replaced their sire. hmmm... that's quite the idea, preserving a sire through his sons.

AI doesn't make any sense in rabbits. You could loose the buck that you are collecting from, from collecting from him, then where would you be... Oh, and you could loose the doe during the procedure too... then you would have wasted all that money.... or, as also happens so frequently in rabbits, everything can go just fine, but the doe doesn't take....

Seems like too much work for something that most likely wont work, especially when it is cheaper to just go buy a good buck, either from the line you want to work for, or a better one....

Really people, these are rabbits....

i agree, this is kind of what i deleted last time.

It really isn't THAT much to get ahold of someone and get a rabbit from across country at convention. Theres people in ohio charging 10 dollars to pick up rabits at convention.

And maybe I'm a bit of a snob, but If I had a top of the line buck, I'm not going to be THAT willing to ship off his seman to everyone who wants it and thats not my name on those babies pedigrees. There are 2 people I would personally work with on that, and the two people who helped me LOTS getting with the harlies, I'd help them in anyway. Not just anyone who would want a peice of him.

AI is no different than breeding. you run the same risk with breeding a buck to a doe.

And how is sending off one of your kits and sending semen off any different? your buck's name is still on that pedigree. and if one or more of those kits win people will want to know the background of that kit and thats good for you and them, cause yourname is on those pedigrees cause it was your buck his line will be on that pedigree. and you don't just ship semen off people have to buy it its like a stud fee (buck fee).To kind of give you an idea. I just AI my heifer it cost me 25 per straw and then the fee to hav the AI done- it is done by someone certfied in AI (you can become certified) so its done right, the person knows how to do it right the same is done for collection so most of the worry is thrown out of the window- in total for two heifers it cost me $90 to have them AIed. Another Bull was going to cost me 50 a straw and on up from there. don't show heed to prices that is for cattle. for pricing think of how much you charge/pay for the use of a buck.

again if you want to see the research and results of AI in rabbits(results are really good btw) go to this site. it is a paper by the scientists who have been working with this

AI is stressful to the buck. It's more stressful on the doe too...

Buying a buck, and having him brought cross country is less stressful on the buck than ONE collection for AI.

Also, by having a buck brought cross country, he is at your disposal, to use freely. AI only works once. And what if it doesn't work? What if the doe misses? Then you're up a creek without a paddle....

Really, there are better ways to improve ANY rabbit ANYWHERE than AI.
