Hi,

I wondered if I could have some advice. I have had “Norman” now for 5 months. It is our first rabbit and we were originally told she was a boy however when going to get neutered (due to signs of aggression) they told us she was a girl.

She is so lovely and friendly to me but my boyfriend has always said she was aggressive to him. When I go in she lunges at my hand and makes grunting but then puts her head down so I thought it was excitement and wanting to be stroked as she would always then just lay down whilst I stroked her. I thought my boyfriend was mistaking this for aggression. However, last night he went to shut her pen door and she ran over and bit him really hard.

I was very shocked as shes never shown any aggression towards me but perhaps ive mistaken the grunting and lunging and she is actually being aggressive to me. He wanted to show me so we went down and everything he did she would lunge, such as him picking up some cardboard she lunged and even threw herself backwards onto the floor.

He is now quite scared of her because she goes to bite him every time he puts his hand near her pen. (for recence she has quite a large pen which opens out into our living room by a door which we always keep open when we are home)

How do I go about fixing this as I dont want her to become more aggressive, he doesnt even want to keep her at this point.

I know rabbits, especially girls, can be territorial but she doesnt mind me cleaning her pen at all, she just tries to climb all over the stuff.

Many thanks,

Has he ever done anything different with her that you don't do, like trying to pick her up, petting her differently(eg. along her back and rump or her ears), really any differences in handling or interactions? Any chance she could have been mishandled by a male at her previous home? I'm assuming the vet went ahead with spaying her? Just checking, to make sure her behavior isn't hormonal.

Her initial lunging towards you sounds like referred aggression, but once she realizes it's you she calms down and wants you to pet her.
