What breed and how old? (One of the Flemish?)

Where is the abscess?

Best treatment for abscesses, depending on the location, is probably an aggressive regime of injectable and oral antibiotics.

Depending on its location and whether it's very localized, it may be able to be surgically removed.

Some will drain and clean them, but that's really not the best option.

if you listed your location we could post rabbit knowledgeable vets in the state . Abscesses can grow rapidly so you shouldn't wait to see one. they can be difficult to treat as rabbits tend to 'wall off" infection so the longer that you don't treat the problem the harder it will be .
i can give you some links with articles but at this point most of us (whether the abscess is opened , drained and scraped or not )

use a combo of bicillin injection and another potent antibiotic like zithromax or chloramphenical with good succes depending in the location of the abscess

it is my flemish male and he is two years old. the abscess is on his cheek under his eye. I live in the Salt lake area.

Must be a Flemish thing here lately. My big girl, Chyna, is also suffering from an abscess.

An abscess in a rabbit is a particularly difficult infection to treat....a limited number of rabbit safe drugs, the pain, secondary infections, the pus is very thick and difficult for drugs to penetrate and the anaerobic bacteria in the core of the abscess.

My normal treatment protocol is a very precise combination of Pen G (a specific combination of Procaine and Benzathine) along with high end dosing of Zithromax. I do not open abscesses. I can't say that I will never open one, but it's something I have never seen the need to do. It is very important to offer husbandry support in the form of nutritional and hydration therapy as well as pain management. Chyna is currently receiving daily injections of Penicillin and an oral dose of Zithromax, extra high quality food with appropriate supplementsand a combination of Metacam and Tramadol for pain and swelling.

Most vets do not know how to treat an abscess in a rabbit. This can lead to some serious side effects. If you can't find an experienced rabbit vet, if you can find one willing to work with me, I can walk them thru the treatment. It is not a quick fix as these infections take time and effort to resolve. And if the teeth are involved, that brings on more talk.

Lots of good responses here earlier. I want to reiterate that competent vet care is really important in abscess treatment. You're gong to want bicillin injections or pen g/zithromax as Randy said and not a weaker antibiotic like baytril.

Thanks everyone! I am going to check this one in my town. He might be willing to work with me if I can get the instructions. If not I'll take him to Salt Lake's vet.
I'll keep ya posted.

I never had to deal with an abscess on any rabbit I have owned. Good advice on how to take care of the abscess if I should ever encounter one on my rabbits.
