I suppose, after appearing out of the blue two weeks ago with a sick bunny, it would only be polite if I properly introduced myself and my tiny herd...:wink
You may call me... Boomie. :coolness: There is a Story about how I became a rabbit person. My S.O. - whom I shall refer to here are El Phantasamo or El - and I would regularly browse Petfinder and daydream about co-parenting an animal together, starting last fall (shortly before I finished college and moved in with him around Xmas). The PLAN was, we'd wait until the snow melted and the mud mostly dried before getting a puppy in the spring, but we didn't want to miss out on The Right One just because we started looking a few weeks too late... but I, a lifelong cat person, also wanted something quiet and non-slobbery to hang out with, a desire complicated by El's tendency to try and sneeze himself to death around felines. Ferrets were the most immediately obvious option, but after some consideration (and fun times looking at hilarious photos of ginormous rabbits), we found ourselves at the home of TK Bunnies for New Years, and seized the opportunity to have El snorgle Teacup (whom I'm told is legendary around these parts). Lack of allergies confirmed, rabbits officially went on the potential pets list. (We have since discovered that El is, in fact, slightly allergic to rabbits, but not enough to be a bother.)
Within two weeks, we came across a Petfinder listing for a highly photogenic, periscope-happy, 5-week-old superdark agouti Flemish Giant... who was one of a litter of EIGHT freshly-rescued baby buns at K&R Small Animal Sanctuary in Appleton (all named after Finding Nemo characters). After a few days trying to talk ourselves out of it, we started the adoption process and the marathon cleaning required to even marginally bunny-proof the living/dining room. Soon, the only thing between us and our two new furkids (K&R wanted them to either join an existing rabbit-family, or bring family with them) was the logistics entailed in adopting from a rescue two hours away from the house...
We finally got to meet & choose our buns at the Bay Area Pet Expo in Milwaukee at the end of January... El chose a ginormous tan agouti snugglemonster, Lord Inky "Squirt" Squidheart, and I picked that same near-black agouti that first caught our eyes as his sherpa guide, Tenzing "Bubbles" Narwhal. They finally came home the weekend before Valentine's day. <3
Since then, we have discovered that Squirt is basically the bunny equivalent to a young William Shatner: ridiculously charming, healthily weighted yet a leeettle bit on the padded side, and secretly a little clumsy (relatively speaking - he's still a rabbit, after all). He is very insistent on ear rubs, always checks your hands for treats, and also sometimes gets into thump-wars with the hot water heater...
Bubbles is a lean, dainty little creature compared to her brother... she eats lots, but far prefers hay and leafies to pellets, which I'm slightly convinced is a plot to make me go pick more dandelion leaves (it's working - I've taken to following her around with treats, going "Eat! Eat, little girl, you are too skinny!"). Still the mad periscoper, she's always a day or two ahead of Squirt when finding new ways to get into trouble... lately this involves following me upstairs, knowing that once there, I will open a door to one of four rooms filled with non-bunny-proofed adventure...
So, that's the story of my tiny herd of giant rabbits. Although about four hours ago I discovered that these guys have ONE littermate that still hasn't found a forever home yet... I doubt that Darla will come live with us, because we really don't have room in the house for another Flemmie, but I can't say it's not tempting...
Now, if you'll excuse me, Bubbles says that if I don't change the litter box, she'll nibble the windowframe clean off...
