A frined of my family has two bunnys both are females, and are penned together, and get along fine. A little while ago, they noticed a red scabby spot on ones hip. They left it alone, thinking it would go away soon, now its gotten to be about the size on my palm(Or thats what they said). Shes not sure what it is, and doesnt have much experience with Buns, so what do you think it may be?

I don't have pictures yet, but I will soon I hope. I was thinking it could be fleas, but the hips usualy isnt a place where they hit bad. She thoguht it may have been Mange, but usualy that isa balding thing, not a scab thing. Anyways, if you guys know anything about this, please tell me. I am worried that they may have waited too long, and that they may loose thier bun.

O,btw, shes eating, drinking, pooping, peeing all fine. Shes still playing, and doing everything like she used to. So.

Thanks for reading! And the reason she hasnt taken it to a vet yet is because we dont really have many rabbit-y vets around here :(. Thanks again! (Also, Ill show that link to her and see if any vets are near! Thanks!)

Its pretty gross, so.

That sounds really big. It's hard to say what it might be without seeing it. If it's spreading like that it might be infected. She really does need to see a vet.

Here's our list for New Brunswick. Maybe some are near enough?

You could also try calling shelters and asking if they know of vets that treat rabbits. If nothing else, take her to a cat/dog vet that is willing to consult with a more competant rabbit vet over the phone.

I saw mange on a guinea pig that was both balding and scabby and the skin looked really irritated. I think if it was mange that even a non-rabbit vet could treat with ivermectin if they got the dosage right.

Could it be that the bunny had a small wound or something, and then the other bunny groomed and licked it and made it worse. That's what happened with our bonded pair of does.

She needs to take the bunny to vet straight away. It might need to be treated for mites or something, but equally, something like fuciderm for a simple wound might be what is prescribed (that is GREAT stuff). Any vet is better than nothing, because I doubt it will get better by itself.

She also probably needs to keep them separate until the wound is healed because the other bunny could easily keep agravating it and making it worse. They will need to be reintroduced, and my best advice for that is to not even try until the wound has started to grow hair all over because otherwise the other bunny will just regroom again. But if it is something not contagious, then closely supervised playtime together might be a good idea, as well as swapping food bowls, toys, anything to keep both rabbits used to the others scent.

Wow that looks pretty bad. I would suggest a vet visit asap. Are they refusing to take her to the vet? Poor bun.

It could just be a scab that (like someone mentioned) was overgroomed and is infected now. Or it could be mites or something. It would be dangerous to guess and self treat a wound of that size. Hopefully they will take her in.

Poor bunny. I can't believe anyone would leave it to get that bad :( I hope for the bunnies sake that they get her to a vet soon. Imagine if you had something proportionately that big on you, it would absolutely kill.

Let us know how it goes :)

I e-mailed them and told them that she needed to be taken to a vet... Im not sure if they are going to take her or not.:X So, if they wont, I am gonna ask mom ifI can tell them that Ill take her off thier hands and see if I can get her better (not telling her that I will take the bun to the vet) that way, Ill be able to do something about it. But I doubt mom would let me. :(

Anyways, thanks so much for the help! :) Ill pass it all on to the owners.

That's terrible. Looks like it could be an infected old wound or even ringworm. That shouldn't go untreated, it can't be very comfortable for the rabbit at all. There may not be many rabbit savvy vets out there but surely your friend can find one. Conditions on the skin like this can get worse very quickly and can be painful.
