    Snuffles

Interesting....first, there is no such thing as "snuffles"....old school generic term that really means nothing. If it is an infection, the most likely pathogen is pasteruella. The correct way to diagnose is by culture. One tricky part of this one. Pasteurella is a faculative anaerobic and...

    Lot of head shaking..?

Another possibility....some of the more advanced vets administer IV drugs thru the large vein in the ear. Might be worth a call to the vet to see if any meds were infused thru the ear vein. Could just be some irritation if this is the case. Randy

    Questions About Baytril

An additional thought or two on the responses to Baytril. If it is used in rabbits, it seems to be more effective when injected. It is indeed caustic and can cause some skin necrosis at the injection point....but so does a lot of other injectables we use....including penicillin. That is why we...

    Tooth Extraction - Slow Recovery

I would have a discussion with the vet about discontinuing the sulfa. Not an ideal drug under most situations (especially with rabbits). Many oral antibiotics can lead to some issues. The key is if the benefit outweighs the potential risks....and with sulfa, there are few, if any, benefits. If...

Unusual chest x-ray - asymptomatic respiratory infection?

I would certainly seek a second opinion....if nothing else just based on the drug prescribed. Sulfa drugs are quite old school and our experience is that they are generally ineffective against pasteurella. They have also been linked to a serious GI condition known as Tyzzer's Disease. In their...

    Sammi in stasis. (Resolved)

I would suggest having a heart to heart discussion with the vet about the use of cisapride. I, in my non-professional opinion, feel that gut motility drugs are inappropriate for rabbits. The dynamics of the GI are much different most other species. These drugs induce painful contractions....and...

HELP! Eye infection after treatment for pasteurella

Only use Gentamicin as an eye drop. You can get Chloramphenicol drops but you want the oral version. It is very gentle on the beneficial bacteria in the GI. If you find a vet that will use this drug, follow instructions for properly handling the drug. Just drops will usually not do much good...

    Sneezing his head off!

Antihistimines in rabbits are controversial. I have never used them. You are many times much better of increasing the humidity in the environment. The jaw will heal assuming that no infecton is involved. Something to remember....and even some vets forget this one.....Pasteurella Multocida...

HELP! Eye infection after treatment for pasteurella

Al....Zithromax does cause some GI upset initially in most rabbits but I just ride it out. I have dosed Zithromax both alone and with Penicillin for months. Didn't seem to have any long term effects. If you can find some injectable Penicillin to go with the Zithromax, I can probably work up a...

    Constipated? Vet now?

Do not used canned pineapple....if you use pineapple, it has to be fresh from the fruit. Papaya also seems to help also. There is a lot of debate and some very questionable "studies" regarding the use of pineapple and/or papaya. There is no clinical evidence that it works...but I have used fresh...

    Reoccuring Eye Problem

If there were no problems with the upper arcade roots, I really feel you are wasting time and money by using Baytril. Many vets are still hung up on this drug because it is "safe". Well, it's not much good if it doesn't work. Idealy, a culture of any discharge should be performed and treated...

    Pepto

Logic would tell you that if the bacteria needs an acidic environment that an antacid would not be in the best interests of the gut. This type of treatment comes from "old school" stuff when there was very little that was truly understood about a rabbit's gut. If this type of product did any...

Giving Sub-Q fluids at home? (RIP)

It is always better if you use a sterile solution. Most water has stuff like chlorine, ammonia and other stuff that might cause a reaction. Plus, bagged fluids have electrolytes that plain water doesn't have...and those are a very important component since if an animal needs fluids, they most...

diarrhea in the buns (BioSponge Dosing )

I would probably wait thru the weekend before reintroducing pellets....and when you do, in a very small amount and increase slowlyto a proper amount. I don't feed many pellets at all....mainly hay. I am thrilled that you were able to get BioSponge and that it worked. We have seen squirrels...

    clostridium / cecal dysbiosis

Clostridium is an anaerobic bacteria and many labs don't check for it unless there is a special instruction. Sulfa would have no effect on Clostridium. And Sulfa has been linked to Tyzzer's.....which is an overgrowth of Clostridium. I don't know of any vets that use sulfa any longer....sure...

    Bio-Sponge - questions and ordering co-op?

If you check their Facebook page, I think there was a thread on there about BioSponge being available in Canada....and I think they listed one vet near the person asking...maybe in Alberta. Randy

diarrhea in the buns (BioSponge Dosing )

Welcome to the world of trying to decipher dosages based on weights of a paste....same thing happens with Ponazuril. The only problem I have with a paste is that the active medicine isn't always distributed evenly. Doesn't matter if it's a "one shot" tube but when you have to split it....it is...

    Bio-Sponge - questions and ordering co-op?

I have the lab data from the Platinum Performace validations. Testing was done on Clostridium P and D in vitro. The labs reported binding nearly all the enterotoxins induced by these bacteria. And these are the two most commonly found pathogens in rabbits during a GI event. I personally use the...

    Maaya's spaying aftercare?

As far as pain meds, Metacam is better than nothing but certainly not an optimal choice. The best pain med for a rabbit is Buprenorphine (Buprenex). It is a narcotic and a controlled drug. It is safe and highly effective.....and it's effective for up to 12 hours per dose. It can be dosed orally...
