Toby has decided that a new, WONDERFUL place to loaf around and relax is INSIDE MY BOX SPRING. There was always a hole (our fault, moving was terrible) and I knew Toby would nibble and tug on the fabric. It's been like that for MONTHS. NOW, he finally decided to crawl inside and nap there. How can I get him to knock it off? I don't want Will or I to lay on the bed and squish him :( That fabric is so thin, I don't think I could sew a patch over it...

HELP!

P.S.: Once my laptop is up, I have pictures of this, too :grumpy:

:DSilly bun. We had a cat that would do that. We didn't realize where she was going for a while.

I agree, I think it would be hard to sew but maybe you could get a large piece of cloth (old sheet perhaps) and a staple gun and redo the entire bottom of the box spring. Or, there's always duct tape.;)

I've thought that you could actually put hardware cloth or chickenwire on the underside of a boxspring for such problems.

Flynn did the same exact thing, so I built a NIC fence that goes around my bed, but is under the bed ruffle so you can't see it.
Before that, I resorted to cramming ANYTHING under the bed so that he couldn't get back there as easily... but he always seemed to find a way.

Tony used to do that, but he'd get stuck in there and be upset that he couldn't find his way out, and I had underbed storage boxes, so he'd thump like crazy all night and annoy the heck out of me! also, the wires of the boxspring worried me as far as cuts and scratcjes. I just took the whole cloth under the boxspring off and removed the underbed boxes so there was nowhere for him to hide.

We wound up just ripping the bottom fabric off last night. We weren't going to deal with it :p I got my laptop charger, so woohoo! Here are the pictures! :p

What? I wasn't doing anything...

You see NOTHING!

The "damage". The hole has been there since we moved in a year ago. Toby never went into the box-spring before...

Peek-a-boo!

Little bunny-feet standing on the fabric...

In the "den"...

After we tore the fabric off. You can see an unhappy Toby on the left :p

I was going to say to just rip the fabric off. But I see you've done that.

One of the past foster catsmade a hole in our boxspring and would hide in there... but not only sleep in there but use it as a washroom.... urine, vomit, and feces... don't say that didn't start to smell afterawhile (I hadn't a clue it was in there until he started getting bad). So I took a knife and cut it all off and into the trash.

I was told to put chicken wire and some heavy duty fabric on the bottom to keep critters out of the boxspring but haven't and don't see reason to since there is no longer fabric there for them to hide in.

The fabric did have a urine smell to it, that's why I opted to just rip it off. Will just grabbed it and yanked it off. No neat little edges, he just tore it off :p

It got rid of that mysterious urine smell, though!

Well, now Toby likes to chew on the wooden beams on the bottom of the box-spring.

When it comes to bunnies, I just can't win... :grumpy:

I hate those and take them off.

I remember when we were little we had an accidental liter of puppies. One some how got caught in the material under the box springs and was strangled to death.

I wonder if I should put a small plank of wood over the beams of the box-spring? You know, so he has a "shelf" to lounge on? I wonder if that would stop the chewing. Either that, or, I could make him a little hammock from some fabric to hang from his "condo". I was thinking of making him an NIC cage and putting the condo in it, too. Just rambling... Blah...

I had the same thing happen to me, although I can't remember if it was Patrick or Benjamin who liked to hang out in the box spring. I was really worried about them getting stuck in the springs witha leg or something. So I went to Fleet Farm and bought the cheapest paneling they had. It only took one piece plus a scrap piece from another project. I just made sure that the entire underside was covered. That fixed that little situation on the new bunny-hideaway-cave.

... I think I might have to cover the bottom... Ugh. I peeked under the bed (to see if Toby snuck out of the room) and he was trying to balance on the brace-boards of the box spring. I wonder if I should just let him sit there... If he can balance there, comfortably, I think he deserves it lol. I don't know, though. There's no place for him to get "stuck" in. They aren't coils. They don't squish down when we sit on the bed, either. He is trying to lounge on a bit of wood that is less than three inches wide.

I feel like such a jerk for taking away his "place". :(

Do rabbits like hammocks of solid material? You know, like those hammocks for ferrets?

I know rats love them and so do ferrets but I've never really seen anyone make a rabbit one. Why not post a thread with that question in the Rabbits forum? I think that's a great topic.

If it were made where they couldn't get caught I would think they might like it.

I think Amy makes her ratties some (Undergunfire) and she might have a couple of tips for you.
