Shades and Baci both stopped eating hay. Baci after his statis problem in Sept and then molar problems in Nov/Dec/Jan. We tried taking the pellets away, yet he's stubborn, still wouldn't touch the hay. However after his last dental visit 2 weeks ago, we mixed orchard, alfalfa and timothy hay and now he's eating the hay. Not alot but at least he's eating it.

Shades on the other hand stopped completely last month after the vet removed one of her molars. She loves her greens, just won't eat the hay. Do you think the hay probably bothers her when she chew on it? Is the greens sufficient to help grind down her teeth?

A variety of hays (and grass) is definitely the trick. I try small amounts of each very often.

You can expand the repertoire and add pruned tree branches (dried naturally in the oven), bark, safe leaves, twigs, herbs, berry vines/leaves and branches.

And stemmy veggies like carrot tops, chewy hard ones like kale leaves and broccoli stems.

My guys are now getting apples skins instead of apple. That sort of thing.

Thanks Sas! Fortunately she's not as picky as Baci, she'll eat a variety of greens. We do give her parsley, kale, red lettuce and the spring mix. I keep forgetting about the carrot tops. She's going to the vet tomorrow to get her front teeth trimmed. I'm hoping with the greens she's been eating, her molars won't have to be dremeled down again for awhile. It's always stressful on her not to mention the slaves!

have the rabbits had facial radiographs,,because i don,t know of any dvm that will pull only one tooth-because the opposing tooth will continue to grow without proper maintenance/unless a radiogragh indicated the extracted area will have another tooth soon.//.there are dietary issues,,hay-ie.timothy/orchard grass is 70% of the diet,,regular grass is non-digestible-fiber(hay)and will work for the diet,,,soft pellets fill up the belly-quickly/thus chewing stops overtime issues will arise,,so never free hand pellets/offer only small amount daily for nutrition and vitamins purposes.//.are the rabbits taking pain/antibiotic meds>??..sincerely james waller--ps alfalfa is a digestible fiber not a hay...

I thought I responded to this post. Are apple skins good for their stomach? Just curious b/c it bothers my stomach. I keep forgetting about carrot tops, will definitely try that. Shade will eat Kale, not Baci.

Good news though~ this week Shades is finally eating hay and we mixed some alfalfa hay with timothy and Baci has been eating his also. We have to make sure it's weaved in good so he'll eat both hay instead of picking the alfalfa out.

James~ Baci was prescribed Metacam but we only gave him a dose after he had his molars dremeled down. She said to stop if he resumed eating on his own and wasn't showing any signs of pain.

Not sure if apple skins are "good" for the stomach. But, are fine to feed.:)

Also, different hays have different textures which grind down the teeth differently. So, grass hays are very good as well. Snuff really loves the one we've been giving him. He used to waste alot, now he consumes it all! Grassy Hay.:p
