Is it okay to have a wire cage with no tray underneath where the poop just falls through the wire to the ground below (in a predator proof yard) ?

The cage is very large so it is possible for a large portion to be a proper material for the rabbits feet, any advice on what material this should be?

Wire should work perfectly fine for the rabbits feet, but I would make sure the cage is high up then. Predators can pull of the rabbits toe's if there is nothing underneath the cage. Even if it is a predator safe yard be aware of anything that could harm your rabbit.
I personally recommend an all wire flooring with resting spots, I use resting mats which can be purchased at any rabbit show or bunnyrabbit.com

Here is an article on wire flooring so you know more about it so its easier to make a decision: http://shinysatins.weebly.com/wire-floors.html

The only thing I would say different from the article rabbitgirl cited is that I prefer 1/2" x 1/2" wire spacing for our cage floor. It still allows the poop to fall through but the grid size is smaller, which works better for small breeds and kits.

1/2" by 1/2" works well too! I personally use the 1 by 1/2" but I know some people do prefer the smaller grids:D

If you add solid flooring, make sure it's temporary and replaceable (like pieces of cardboard or wood that aren't actually fastened into the cage). The rabbit WILL use it as a bathroom, so you'll want to be able to clean or replace it easily.

Not always so, part of Bandit's hutch has solid wood floors and he has never peed on it. I put a litter tray in his hutch so he always just goes in there.

Wire floors are fine though, you just have to make sure you're cleaning up the ground underneath the hutch reasonably often, because it's going to attract flies and will probably smell quite a bit if you don't.

Actually, if you have a worm bed in the dirt under the cage, the worms do a good job of keeping any smell down. You might have neighbors who would come shovel the poop under the cage for you so they can use it in their garden. :wink
