My little lionhead Smokey is a bout ten weeks old and I have him for nearly two weeks now. He is doing really well, eating lots of hay and putting on weight.
All my other buns are on an adult pellet that is rather large in size and although I offered them to Smokey he didn't seem too keen on them. I had also recently ordered a large bag of commercial rabbit pellets that were recommended to me by several Irish breeders. They are smaller pellet size and have about 17% fibre - not as much as the pellets I normally use but not bad I would think.
Smokey has taken to those pellets but only eats about half a hamster bowl full at night. I was surprised that for the last few days I've been finding cecals in his cage:?
As far a I know they are a sign of excess nutrition but where could I possibly cut down? He wasn't even eating an alfafa based pellet for young rabbits but one intended for adult rabbits. My other rabbits get those pellets too mixed with their regular feed to make it go farther. But not of them showed any problems.
What could be the reason for him not eating some of his cecals?

That's interesting. Usually extra cecals means too many pellets, but usually young guys should get as many pellets as they will eat. Has he been de-wormed? Also, some young bunnies at the shelter don't eat all their cecals and I guess it's ok, according to our people.

I changed his pellets anyhow as I am not so sure about the bargain brand. The premium pellets have the same amount of fibre so it shouldn't make a difference but it might be worth a try.

The new pellets were a complete disaster. He liked them way much than the old ones an scoffed 3 times as much. Before he used to only eat half a hamster bowl and had some cecals in the cage in the morning. Now you can imagine the mess!!!!
What am I supposed to do? He eats so few pellets and he is only two months old i can't really withhold them? Could there be something wrong with his digestive system? he looks and feels healthy and all his other poops are normal:?

Hmmm... I personally would still give him the new pellets. It may be messy, but after a few days of having them, he might not be so hungry all the time. It sounds like he really hates the old stuff and was just really hungry when you gave him the new stuff, so he overate. Deworming could help too. Some baby bunnies aren't very good at eating their cecals, to be honest, so that may just be how he is for a little while longer.

I weighed the amount of pellets I put into his bowl tonight. It looked like the amount he had yesterday and that's about 50 gr. On the pack it says for young bunnies to feed approx 60-80 gr so I'm certainly not givung him too much. For some reason he hasn't touched his pellets yet tonight. I hope he is ok. He seems somewhat different from other baby buns i had:?
