Why don't bunnies chew their nails?

My Kirby does chew his dewclaw. I can't count on him to do it though because his dewclaw usually does look sorta jagged. If I waited long enough I am sure he'd chew it off, but I'd rather not chance it.

I waited too long with Toby once and Toby's dewclaw tore off :( Speaking of which - he was climbing on me last night looking for cherries to eat and his nails have grown pretty long AGAIN. Geez, this kid grows nails like crazy.

Buns who like to dig do tend to need trimmings less often. Mine, thankfully, are not diggers. But it just means I have to grab them up for a mani/pedi more often. I am ok with that. I just love to touch their little soft feet and the only time I get to do this is when I cut their nails.

Our Leo chews his nails...right to the quick...
If I am lucky he will leave enough room for me to use an emery board to take the sharp points off...but most times he chews them to a wicked sharp point!:(

That would be Nice, Wouldnt it be!!! We had dogs that would chew and keep her nails short,,

My guess would be they don't need/want them short. Sharp, long nails would be ace at cutting through the mud when digging, and this action in itself would, I'm sure, keep them short in the wild.

I guess indoor bunnies would need to have their nails clipped more often that outdoor bunnies, just because of the floor they live on.

I'm so glad that my buns' nails are light- it makes it so much easier to see the quick! With my dogs (they don't need their nails trimmed much at all, perhaps just once a year) they are so dark I just have to try my best- see if they pull away when he start to clip etc. It's so stressful!
