We have had our male (fixed) dwarf rex bun for 4 years now. He is litter trained besides his accidents within his cage that he has always had since having him. Recently, he peed on our bed out of no where, he has never done this. Today was cleaned it well, but I am fearful this will become a habit, any suggestions? We do not think it is anything health related (bladder infection etc) since he is acting normal otherwise. TIA

Either block it off or put a litter pan up there. We have several pans placed around for urine--the pellets they leave almost everywhere but are easy to clean up with no messes. Out of more than 50 rescues, we have had only 2 that were very fastidious and would only use the pan in their hutch and left nothing to clean up.

It could just be a one off occurrence. But if it keeps happening, there are a few possible causes to consider for an unusual change of behavior like this in an older rabbit that has been with you for several years. Any recent changes to your household or your rabbits environment; like a new area to your rabbit, furniture or other things moved around, new pet in the house, visitors, or any other recent changes, can spark territorial marking behavior.

Then there's the possibility of a health problem, like a UTI, other bladder issues, kidney disease, e. cuniculi, arthritis, etc.

Or your bun just decided it was too far to make it to the litter box in time, or after 4 years, that he likes peeing on soft things (particularly common with beds and couches).

If it keeps happening and you can't find a behavioral or environmental cause for it, you may need to have your rabbit checked by a knowledgeable rabbit vet for a possible medical related cause, especially if a urine soaked butt or other symptoms start happening.
