I am looking for book recommendations for pet rabbits and rabbit health. What do you guys suggest? I've read "A House Rabbit Primer" by Lucile Moore - it has a lot of good features such as a chart for symptoms and possible causes, training, etc. The 4th edition of the "House Rabbit Handbook" would be another option. I've only seen the 2nd edition at the library - does the new edition have symptoms/causes/treatments like the "House Rabbit Primer?"

As for books I'm not familiar with, how is "Rabbit Health in the 21st Century?" I've also heard some good reccomendations for the ARBA book which is super cheap on Ebay. Is it relevant for a pet owner? Should I watch for a specific edition?

If there are any other good books out there, let me know!I'll probably order soon. I want to get them, read them, and pass them on to the friend who is bunnysitting for me in August. He's been interested in bunnies since he rescued a wild baby rabbit and nursed it back to health last spring.

My personal favorites are "Rabbit Health in the 21st Century" and "Rabbit Production 8th edition".

If your looking for general information about a pet rabbit, "Rabbits for Dummies" is another one I liked.  "The House Rabbit Handbook" is also good.

Rabbit Health in the 21st Century is a must have (I have the older version).

Rabbit Production is considered the rabbit enthusiast's"Bible". Covers extensive info for all rabbit ownersincluding pet owners.

I have such a hard time picking rabbit books.  One thing that has been GREAT is the public library.  Perhaps you can check out the same books you are undecided on, read them, then choose which one (or two or three :)) has the best information.  I like "Rabbits" by Bobbye Land.  Hoppy Shopping.  Let us know which one you get:)

Maybe I'll pick up a couple at the library to entertain myself with during my knee surgery....a minimum of 2 weeks of very lil walking... I'll need something to do!

These are the books I have, which came from the Reading List on this forum

House Rabbit Handbook - Very good
Rabbits for Dummies - Not just for Dummies
The Really Useful Bunny Guide - Carolina James
All About Your Rabbit - Baron's

Plus I get alot of my infomation either from this site, checking links or just doing a search on google or yahoo.

Which reminds me as our dear "Uncle Buck" would say "keep a hard copy, cause you never know how long a site will around", or something likethat. So true !!!!!

I print all the time !
If you can't print save the complete website on your hard-drive !

My personal favourite is the collins family pet guides rabbit. It has loads of info on outside and house bunnies and basically everything you need to know, i bought lots of books before i bought my buns and this was my fave, it's the only one that i refer back to all the time, lots of stuff on rabbit health and how to spot if your rabbit is ill and how to help them. Great book.

The best all around, all inclusive rabbit bookI've found is RABBIT PRODUCTION, McNitt, et all, I have editions 6, 7and 8. Has something for everyone, pet, show and commercial rabbit people.

Others are:

THE BIOLOGY OF THE LABORATORY RABBIT, 2nd ed, which is more indepth covering rabbit science. (AND expensive) found copy of 1st edition in health Sciences Library while 'in nursing school and bought 2nd edition as soon as it came out in 90s

RABBITS- HEALTH, HUSBANDRY & DISEASES, Virginia Richardson

TEXTBOOK OF RABBIT MEDICINE, Frances Harcourt-Brown

THE BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE OF RABBITS AND RODENTS, Harkness & Wagner

Being a RN Ilean more to scientfic texts on rabbit health and disease. When i first became interested in rabbits was in days before widespread internet use, i visited libraries and read everything theyhad on rabbits. Bob Bennett's book RAISING RABBITS THE MODERN WAY was newly published then, read it cover to cover and then called him up and order some of his Tan rabbits:)His book is still a good start for the rabbit enthusiast.

The Private Life of The Rabbit by R.M. Lockley (out of print-look through web for Used Books)

Rabbits and Hares by Anne McBride

I learned a lot from these books - recommended to me by Buck Jones. The first one was a study, that I believe, was the only one that has been done of it's nature whereas the gentleman watched the rabbit behaviors for approximately 4-5 years. He was living on an estate and had a room in the basement that had a glass wall where he could sit and observe their behavior while underground.

Rabbits and Hares is a fascinating book. I was extremely lucky to inherit Buck's rabbit book collection. Without a Doubt, the Rabbits and Hares book is my favorite, however, unfortunately it's out of print. Buck had spent months and months searching the net for it and finally found it somewhere in England and had it shipped over. If you ever see it or can get your hands on it, I strongly recommend it.

There is a list of books in the Cheat Sheet as well if you haven't seen it.

THE BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE OF RABBITS AND RODENTS, Harkness & Wagner

Great book, Rick! A bit over my head, but if I stick with it, I can figure it out. A lot of scientific case studies, etc. I just wish they had better divided the different type of rodents and rabbits out better, but still, it's definitely helped me from time to time. Will look into the others. Hope I don't have to be an RN in order to understand them.
