I have twokits that are currently 16 days old. I was wondering at what age is the earliest I can tell their gender? I know it's pretty hard to do so any suggestions would be great because this is my first time!
They should be old enough, so if you have been handling them enough you should be able to flip them and see if you know what you're seeing. I've never relied on pet stores or shelters as they are wrong half the time or more.
I can tell within a few days of birth usually. It will get easier as you become more experienced with it.
Turn the babies onto their backs and push on the vent with your finger. On a doe, the "front area" of the vent will have one long slit down the middle. On a buck, you will just see a hole in the middle of that area, not a slit.
Next time you have a litter, give it a try!
Start at about a week old and try to compare, you may be surprised at the difference you see. Then you can keep checking weekly as they grow and see how accurate you were. That's how I learned...it's what happens when you're impatient.
Thanks everyone!! You all should go check out my topic calledHelp with sexing 17 day old kits!!It has pics of the kits parts and maybe some of you could tell the gender
