what to use for cage base to go under x pen and over carpet. when I open the large dog puppy kennel I've converted into a rabbit cage and let him out into the xpen what can I use to cover the carpet under the xpen? he will stay in the kennel at night but it will be left open during the day so he can hop around the xpen.... Kai will not be able to run free through my apartment per the apartment guidelines and I won't leave him in a "kennel" all day. I can also block off our small kitchen and he can run around in there no problem. but I'm concerned about our carpet under the xpen when he'll be out and about during the day (able to go freely between his "kennel" and the xpen). I'm concerned about damage to the original carpet. I've thought about purchasing a large living in room rug (not decorative) and play puppy pads under it...would this work? What would you recommend for a base? Or that stick on tile or maybe linoleum...not sure how I would lay them down I suppose of a piece of wood...what wood would be good to use to stick tiles to or linoleum?

I used puppy wee pads until Shida was litter trained now she doesn't need anything and touch wood she has not peed on the carpet in the rental property yet

I have outdoor rabbits, but sometimes I have to bring them inside so I have a setup for them where I use a big entry mat that has carpet on one side and a rubber back. I flip it over so the rubber part is the floor of the xpen. I got it at Home Depot. You just have to get one that is larger than the xpen so the rabbit can't chew the edges. I have looked into Coroplast too, which is like plastic cardboard and comes in big sheets. I was worried that might be too slippery so I went for the rubber mat. The stick-down vinyl floor tiles stuck to a board would work too. I was considering doing that, but it seemed like it would get quite heavy. If the weight is not a concern for you, it would be a good way to get the exact size/shape you want. You could even make an edge around it to hold the xpen steady. I've seen people make bases like that for the NIC condos.

I went with a rubber horse stall mat. Durable, easy to clean and remains cool in warmer temps. Only problem is its very heavy. It comes in 6ft by 4ft and weighs nearly 100lbs. Thats a major detraction but its guards the carpet under it completely and is resistant to my rabbits who like to chew things, even coroplast.
