I am going to be buying my first bunny this coming weekend, and I had a few questions about showing him. He is a Jersey Wooly that I found at a local show. It was a 4H show which I think is a smaller type show (not 100% sure) and the bunny got a few ribbons, as well as an award for best of breed, and has won other 4h awards in the past. He is coming with a pedigree, and because I haven't had bunnies before, I hadn't even thought about showing rabbits.

However I don't knwo for sure if showing is something I would like, and just in case, I'd like to make sure I get all the info and paperwork from the seller that I need. I have read a few things about ear tattoos and registration numbers, but I'm not even sure what these are for. I really need some help! Thanks!

Welcome to RO! Congratulations on getting a Jersey Woolie. They are really sweet bunnies.

Regarding showing, you should attend a show and see what it's all about. Talk to people there and you can get loads of information regarding showing your bunny.

Show bunnies do have tattooes for registration purposes. I would make sure the owner gives you a pedigree paper showing the lineage and also the registration paperwork if the bunny has a tatoo. You will need this if you plan to register your bunny for an ARBA show, which is a bit different than 4-H. 4-H does go by the ARBA guidelines for breeds.

I've never shown my bunnies. Hope those who do can give you some more info.

Wishing you luck. Showing can be loads of fun and a great place to meet people who enjoy their bunnies too!

Showing is fun!!! The only thing you need from the seller is the pedigree. Well, you don't even need that if you aren't planning on breeding him, because you don't show the pedigree at the shows. If he has an R in the right ear, then you'll need the registration paper.

When you fill out your show entry form, the only thing you put on it is the ear number, breed, variety, age (senior or junior only, not actual date), and sex.

Have fun!!!

Sorry regarding pedigree, I was thinking in COD terms. lol

Definitely go to a show, see how it all is, and just have fun!

Thanks for the info! If he doesn't have an R in his ear or a number in his other one, is there still a possibility of showing him?

I really wish I knew about any shows in my area but I haven't been able to find out about any yet. Arizona must not be a happening place for bunny events

Yes, you can still show him. You'll just have to tattoo him, either before you go, or have someone do it when you get there.

Go to ARBA's website and under member resources, you can search for shows in your state. I'll tell you now, I've been traveling 3+ hours to shows. They aren't close, by any means. lol

oh ok i will check out the site. Can I tattoo him myself or does it have to be an official? I am a tattoo artist so I actually have everything I'd need lol

Oh actually the closest shows to me listed are 7+ hours away....hmmm maybe I will have to forget the showing idea. I don't want to super stress the poor guy

If he was shown in a 4-H show then chances are he already has an ear tattoo in the left ear. When you get him check to make sure the tattoo in his ear matches what's on his pedigree (if he has one).

I don't know if you can use a 'human' tattoer, maybe. I know that tattoo kits made for doing animals aren't recommended for human use.

I think getting more rabbit fanciers to shows is a personal goal of mine but also I couldn't believe the only shows available were 7+ hours away because even in big ol' texas there are shows that are only less than an hour away from us.

Sooo if you would like the information on shows I can post what I have found and hopefully you can attend a show and love them as much as other show people. They really are a great place to gain friends and help or get help from other bunny people.

Here is the show listing for Arizona Rabbit Breeders Association
http://www.azrcba.org/shows/

Here is the official flyer for the SARBA show I would contact the secretary for a show and see where you can find more information on other shows that are sponsored from them.

I am unable to find an SARBA website but here is the president of the clubs information
http://www.arba.net/district/2/District Reps.html

I notice there are alot of california shows but maybe you could look in new mexico also. Basically just search any state and add rabbit breeders association after it and you are likely to find something
