I was wondering what I should look for when I move out and go looking for Hammurabi's playmate. Right now he's a pretty hefty rabbit, aged almost two, and although I haven't seen him around other rabbits I know he readily accepts dogs and cats. He's pretty fearless but has only shown aggression when his raisins are on the line (yah don't mess with Hamm's raisins).

I know with older cats, a new kitten is easier for them to accept than another older cat but I have noooo idea with rabbits. Obviously, I'd be looking for a rabbit that has been known to play nice with other rabbits but other than that I'm kinda lost.

Should I be looking for a baby bunny? A dwarf (I have no idea what breed Hamm is and if he's smaller or larger than the norm)? If I get an older rabbit should I look for one that readily accepts new things? One who's affectionate? Anything else?

I don't plan on moving out anytime soon (within the next few years) but I would like to be able to know what I'm doing when I do move...

Help, please. :?

Breed, age and even sex don't really matter. The individual personality of the rabbits is what makes the difference.

If you can, take Hamm to a rescue that has rabbits so he can meet other rabbits to see if they get along. Some will surprise you on who they choose. It would be best to visit with a few rabbits so you can gauge how he does with different rabbits.

If you can't get to a rescue, it can be a bit harder to find the right rabbit. It would be better to get a rabbit of the opposite sex and around the same size. An adult would be better as you know the personality more and they can be fixed sooner. Babies are not really the best as they might not have the same personality as they get older. Rabbits might also fight once the hormones kick in, so 2 that get along might not when that happens.

It is hard to determine if 2 rabbits will get along based on personality until they meet. My Amelia was quite shy when I got her and has become much more outgoing with Korr around (they are now bonded). They got along right from the start and aside from some humping did not have any issues. The humping has even mostly gone away since Amelia was spayed.
How a rabbit is with other rabbits can be totally different than how they are with people.

I would suggest visiting with other rabbits if possible. You can get a better idea of what he is like with rabbits and use that to help you find a rabbit for him in the future.

I honestly have no idea if we have a rabbit rescue somewhere near here but I'll keep it in mind! I think the SPCA has rabbits sometimes...

Thanks for the advice. I figured with rabbits, having an older one was better than a baby but it's good to hear it confirmed.
