Well with the recent post aboutthe rabbitry tradgedy, it has made me wonder what I should do to help protect my bunnies.

Today I opened up the door to the 'bunny barn' which is a portable building in the back yard. We live in a neighborhood, so lots of kids and their parents walk on the road by our house. It was unusually cool today so I thought I would let the breeze into the barn. Just a little bit ago I went outside tocheck on things and felt like I was being stared at-I was...there was a man, woman and her child trying to look into the building to see the rabbits from our front yard!! I'm sure it was just curious intentions but now I'm worried about (heaven forbid...) my bunnies being stolen at night or during the day while I'm away.So what do you have for security measures for your rabbitry? I'm kinda tempted to go buy an inexpensivesecurity camera...maybe I'm overreacting but I would be devestated ifoneof my bunnies were taken.:(

Wow Lil'Angel that does sound scary! how far away from your front yard/road is the rabbitry?

For my rabbitry, we have two large swinging doors and one bolts to the floor and door frame when you're not using it (it has no handle, the doors on our shed are French Doors, somewhat), and the other you shut the door and twist the handle, so you have to turn the handle clockwise to open the door, and turn it counterclockwise to lock the handle in place. As well as that, though, (since anyone can get in just by turning the handle), we have a key to lock it. It's good too though, cuz if you're inside the shed (you can't lock it obviously, and if someone locks it from outside, you're trapped inside) you can put a broom through the handle and it slants diagonally and know one on the outside is able to open the door :)

We do that for safety when we're in the shed, but usually we don't lock it. We used to, when we first got it, and we should be, since people prowl through our yard at night -scary!-. We'll be starting to lock it though, because I don't want to take chances!!

I've actually put up a section of fence so no one can see into my barn from the street. Planted bushes in front of it. I have dead bolts on the door now (thanks to a certain dog incident). I have motion sensor lights for night time. (I used to have a motion sensor in the barn that rang a bell in the house if anyone walked through. But the rabbits, especially the Flemish, would set it off if they started running around! They are just too big!) So now I have a "baby minder" type transmitter out there with the reciever unit next to my bed. And I trust my dogs to tell me if they hear anything.

These are good suggestions! Yes, the barn can be easily seen from the front yard, there is no privacy fence and unfortunately no trees to hide it either-it's out in the open. This is a rent house so we really can't put up a fence. *sigh* Just another year and we're moving-YAY!

I do have a baby monitor so I think I will put it in the building for now, at least until I can get a lock on the door, I'd feel much better about that. Thanks for the ideas you two!

Motion sensor lights are a brilliant idea! Ever had an actual human/other animal set them off though, besides those silly Flemish of yours? lol. The Flemish were probably just seeing how fast you'd react in case of a real emergency! ;)

That's a good idea to use a baby monitor, but my bunnies are sooo noisy, and all I'd be able to hear would be them, which = no sleep. lol. And plus, it'd probably creep me out if I heard talking/or movement out there by someone unknown - I surely would immediatley get help or call 911, but it'd just be freaky!

I think the motion sensor lights are a great idea. They're enough to spook people and make them wonder if you have other security measures, like an alarm system.

I just bought some hay from a rabbit breeder. His rabbits were in a detached garage and he had a home made screen door made with pretty heavy mesh so he could open up the solid door and let more air in but still have a sturdy, lockable door. That's a really good idea since he lives in town and near a school.

If I ever heard voices out there, (especially at night!) I'd call the police and let my dogs out! I also havethe lights in the barn on a remote, I can turn them on from the house. Then I can see what's going on.

lilangelhotots, You could put up a temporary fence, 2 stakes and a screen. Or plant a couple of inexpensive bushes at the front. (And take them with you when you move!)

I don't keep the baby monder reciever turned too loud. And except for the boys stamping, they don't make that much noise.

My rabbitry is in an addition on the back of my detatched garage and you have to go through the overhead doors to get in. The door is on a garage door opener and won't open without using the transmitter. I also have motion detector lights and the building is surroundes by chain link fence. Nobody goes in my yard without the dogs knowing anyway.

I would go to a home improvement store and check out the chainlink panels used for dog kennels. They aren't that expensive and you could surround the building with them or just use them on the front with those plastic inserts that you weave into them.

I have a super protective Japanese Akita Inu security system. :biggrin2: He'd let me know if there was anything going on and he'd be ready to protect me or the property.

My rabbitry is two breezblock sheds just a few metres away from the house and the gate is about 6ft and is locked at night so they're pretty secure. I also have a wire mesh across the bottom of the door, it's not very high but I've never had anything jump in.

I was thinking about getting some small wireless cameras too, would be awesome to be able to check on the buns from the internet where ever I am!

Good one Jensen...my security system fails each time (I have a Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier)...she is pretty useless in that area.

In reality, half my rabbitry is outside andcan not be seen from the road or the sidewalk. I have a 6 foot stockade fence that runs the perimeter of the backyard and a 4 foot one to enclose it. I just have to make sure that the gates are shut each night. The other half of the rabbitry is in my basement. My immediate neighbors know I have rabbits and actually enjoy them but we are seeing a lot of new neighbors moving in and they don't know about them. I believe that I am not supposed to have so many so we don't tell anyone. I also don't let people come to my house unless I know you.

I too have a motion sensor light however, the dogs set it off all the time. I had a dog attack back in 1993 and now my cages have boards underneath so no animal can get them from below. All the cages have double locks on them too so there are no accidents.
