This might sound like a rediculous question to ask but what does it mean when someone asks what lines are behind your rabbits?? I sort of know what it means but I want to be sure.
Ditto!Since I used to breed lionheads - I'm going to go with that as an example.
In the lionheads there are several well-known breeders and their rabbits are known by the rabbitry name. Some of the more easily recognizable ones are "Cimmaron" (Gail Gibbons), DJ's Rabbits (she's out of breeding now), Pridelands (Theresa Mueller and her partner Cheryl), Legendary Minis (Nita Shannon) and many many others. Some of the lionheads from those lines are particularly well know - such as Cimmaron's Firebear who has fathered many offspring and was a top show winner.
The thing is - some "lines" aren't always compatible with others. Its hard to explain - but I didn't care for crossing Prideland's rabbits with Cimmaron rabbits - I didn't feel like the rabbits turned out good. However, I could cross a Cimmaron rabbit with another line and get better results. For example - Firebear was known for having EXCELLENT type - but sometimes the mane on his offspring didn't always last a long time. In the meantime, Bob Whitman's "Blue Boy" had offspring who had manes that lasted for what seemed liked forever....but the type wasn't that great. So I tried crossing some of FireBear's grandchildren with Blue Boy's grandchildren to get rabbits with type and mane.
So basically - people are asking you the rabbitries behind your rabbit's ancestors.
I hope that helps!
