Since Gus is very clearly a mixed breed rabbit, and since he's been neutered and, therefore, needn't have an accurate pedrigree, do you think it's okay to just take a guess at what his parentage might be and call him that?

The reason I ask, is I've had several people ask me whatbreed of rabbit he is. My kids have been saying he's an English Spot (originally I thought that's what he was!:baghead), but I don't want to misinform anyone!

Myguess:

A New Zealand/Satin/Mini Rex cross.

There are plenty of NZ, Satin and Mini Rex breeders locally. I think he has a very commercial build, but he's a bit small (7 1/2 lbs.), at least according to the ARBA standards. His fur isn't shiny like a Satin, but it's quite fine, aside from some longer, coarse guard hairs. It's definitely a roll-back coat, too. And sometimes he gets these funny curly/kinky whiskers that grow in. Which makes me think he may have some Rex in him.

Of course, I realize he could be a mix of many breeds. Butdoes it sound likely those breeds might be in his parentage?

Thanks!

Duh! He's a dalmation bunny! :rollseyes

I'm sorry :p I know my inputs have not been particularly helpful in the breed area, but I just couldn't resist :D

I just love Gus!! I want to squeeze him! But he would probably growl at me ;-)

I'm going to guess a NZ mix, but that's all I've got.

I would agree with you that he is probably a commercial mix. Although English Spots do have a broken black pattern, broken patterns are common in many more breeds than one. So generally, pattern and color aren't a good indication of breed.

Based on his side and build, my guess is as good as yours- some kind of mixed commercial type rabbit. :)

Thanks, guys!

Laura, I don't think Gus would growl at you. He saves that for his family. :p

Julie, it wasn't the colouring alone that had led me to believe he was a Spot, but rather all thepictures Ifoundon the Internetof "English Spots" in shelters and rescues that lookedso muchlike Gusthat led me to that conclusion. It wasn't until I learned that most "English Spots" in rescues are just broken black rabbits, that I realized Gus likely wasn't an English Spot. :rollseyes

I have found a couple pics of overweight Spots that look an awful lot like Gus, but Gus is definitely not overweight. He's always this fluffy. ;)

Anyway, thanks for the help in identifying my broken black New Zealand cross rabbit. :)
