I know you all get lots of these - but I was trying to figure out how big my boy will get and I was told to get an idea of the breed to get that answered.

I got him from a shelter so my information is kind of spotty. They told me he is 10 months old (according to the people that gave him up) and they said that the breed is an American Tan mixed with mini-lop. Does that sound about right? Right now he weighs 3 pounds.

Well his looks like a Tan, and their ideal weight 4.5-5.0 pounds. So he still is kinda young, so I think he is a Tan because of his coloring. And he looks lik he could be mixed with a Lop because of his ears aren't straight and all.

But that's just what I think.

I am going to say Tan also. Mixed with lop because the way his ears flop.

He is a cutie!

Tans have a "V" ear carriage, so they are not known as a breed that has a very erect ear.

Do you have a photo of the belly color, and the color of the belly near the skin?

I'll try to get a picture of him when I get home. His tummy is the light brown like you can see around the edges there, but I'll get a picture of him when I get home from work and see what we can see!

Try to blow on the fur while taking the picture of his tummy - see if there is a color under the other color

Here's a photo of a purebred chocolate Tan that we used to have. The belly is a good indicator because the wideband gene is recessive. A carrier will have dark belly undercolor (I think the inbetweenies are sometimes referred to as "taters"). A homozygous wideband won't have the slate blue belly undercolor.

The purebred Tan should have a nice flat, snappy flyback coat - although I have seen purebreds with bad coats.

Alright, I tried my best but Bill is a boy that neither likes to stand still nor be on his back. And does not like his tummy petted... :shame

But I did get almost a couple so you can get an idea - his stomach is all lighter, the same color as the back of his neck. The skin appears to be really light under it - but he wouldn't really hold still long enough for me to check it out. And I had to give him at least 4 ear rubs before he forgave me for trying to get him on his back...

Oh I sure did. He is just the best, what a great rabbit for a first time mom. He's a little lover. And I'm just smitten. :biggrin2:

If the belly has no darker fur under the tan on the belly, I'd say the chance is good that your Tan could be purebred. Also, he's very tiny to be mixed with a Mini Lop - so I think that's unlikely. I do know that breeders have used Tans to produce that color in Netherland Dwarfs and Mini Rex.

Note the similarities below in the comparison of your rabbit and our purebred Tan.

They are awfully similar, aren't they! I checked his tummy again and it is all the same color tan that you can see around the edges with light skin underneathe. And then he kicked me so...

He is pretty small though - he is 10 months and only 3 pounds. Whatever he is I love him very much! Lol.... just want to know how big he's gonna get.

I think he is quite the looker though!

It's unlikely that he'll grow much more. Tans can be kickers and generally don't like their bellys messed with. ;)My son has a chocolate Tan doe that is a little pistol!
