Hello-

My older rabbit J.J. has an eye problem with her left eye. It's allweepy and wet, and she doesn't wantto open her eye unlessshe's hopping around. I'm getting concern about it because this is thefirst day that her eye is mostly shut tight.

What can/should I do? I've tried using a wet and dry cottonball toclean it, but then she just "cries" even more causing her eye to getwet and tender.

Please reply!

There could be any number of problem with hereye. Becausean eye infection could result in theloss of her eyesight, I would highly recommend a visit to the vet.

Some common causes of "weepy eye" include malocclusion (puttingpressure on the sinus cavities), entropian (genetic defect in theeyelid which causes scarring of the cornea), bacterial infection, blocked tear duct, injury to the eye, tumor in the eye as well as otherpossible eye diseases.

Thank you for your reply- I'll try to get her to the vet soon

As Pam said, it could be any number of things. I wouldn't try to self-diagnose.
Please let us know what the vet says.

The sooner you get it taken care of, the better. If, for example, it'ssomething like conjunctivitis, it can be dealt with successfully withsome ointment if caught early on. If you let it go too far withouttreatment, there are a number of other things that can go wrong.

Until you get to the vet, I'd just put warm compresses on it to helpcatch the tears and take off the dried fur. Sometimes it's better ifyou just let them lean into the compress rather than trying to wipe itdry.

Will say a prayer for your little one.
