Weatherly came into the barn limping this morning... no heat or swelling in her leg so after speaking with the veterinarian we are treating it as a hoof abscess - soaking it twice a day and packing the hoof and she is being really good about it.

The abscess was in the frog area of her foot and I think it broke this afternoon some time as Weatherly was out chasing her buddy Nefertiti... horse people will know I mean it when I say the drainage stunk to high heavens. Have to pack it now and hope the duct tape and cotton stays in place.

Riding again will be off for a few days until she heals. When I soaked her hoof, she started grooming me with her lips so I think it felt good to her.

Oh gosh! poor thing! I wonder what caused it? Kota had a little hole from stepping on a nail we think, but one of the mares had a small abscess that came out when the farrier took care of her one day. Freaky stuff.
GET WELL WEATHERLY!

I read it can come from mud and debris working its way into cracks in the white line...whatever caused it, I'm trying to fix it.

Our farrier is out on the 7th so he can poke around and trim some more to see if there is any more infection.

I need to check Kota cause of that hole in his frog. He's outside in the mud all the freakin' time! Don't need an abcess..... *sigh*

How's Weatherly doing now?

She looks "off" to me but not bobbing her head like she was - would probably look OK to outsiders but I really know how she moves. The hoof looks better and does not smell as much as it did.

She is more sore from the 3 way and the Rhino-Flu shots I gave her yesterday - although she did not fight me like the vet (the vet does the WNV and Rabies shots for me). Vet suggested a little Bute paste and Weatherly normally hates it but today she was anxious for some relief and she practically sucked the medicine from the tube - normally it is a battle for me. I feel bad for her not able to get that sore neck down to eat I massaged it and she liked that. I have to watch her as she milks it for all it is worth and of course I come running to her aid... she has me well-trained to a fault. I left her for a moment and she managed to get her head down - the more she moves it the better she will be but she is my baby. :)

Nefertiti kept her moving today - she is my active, spooky yet curious Shetland.

This morning's hoof soak for Weatherly was without halters and leads... she stood happily with her foot in the bucket of hot water and Epsom salts.
