UPDATE 6-11-05
************************
When I spoke with Denise Durrer yesterday, she approved the disclosure of
some more specific information. Here's what we know:

The affected herd is/was located in Evansville, IN.

The herd remnant has been euthanized and disposed of.

The owner of the herd both bought and sold animals via flea markets, pet
stores, etc.; usually of younger age/smaller size.

The outbreak began just after bringing in rabbits purchased at a flea market
in Greenville, Kentucky that is held on Tuesdays.

**While there was some speculation about infection coming up from Mexico via
infected rabbits brought in for swap meet sales, this is held to be highly
unlikely and improbable, but not completely impossible.**

Trace-forwards are in process for 2-4 animals of 6-8 weeks of age sold to a
pet store; PET FOOD CENTER on Franklin St, Evansville, IN.
Of these animals, one remained on the premises and the store is working
with USDA--the rabbit is being purchased, euthanized and tested, and of
course the store is being thoroughly cleaned.
The remainder were sold for cash; there is no record of where they wound
up or whether for pets or reptile food.

IF YOU ARE AWARE OF WHERE THESE SOLD ANIMALS ARE, PLEASE CONTACT Ms.
DURRER IMMEDIATELY! Denise Derrer, Public Information Director, Indiana
State Board of Animal Health; 317/227-0308; email: [email protected]

Even if they've been fed to other species, the location is important to
know, due to the extreme transmissibility of this virus. (We also don't
know for sure if reptiles will excrete or regurgitate viable virus should
they consume an infected rabbit.)

Tracebacks are also in process in Kentucky, with the KY veterinary services
interviewing many rabbit people who attend the flea market on Tuesdays at
Greenville, KY.

Again, IF YOU KNOW people who go to flea markets in this area, it is VERY
important to let the KY Veterinarian (Dr. Hollis) know who they are, and
encourage the people to contact Dr. Hollis (he really won't bite!) with any
information they might have in regard to others at the markets, any rumors
or facts related to rabbit death losses.....

Dr. Hollis' office can be reached by calling (502) 227-9651.

We cannot emphasize enough the importance of communication in this disease
outbreak! It may mean the difference between nailing down the point source
or being left wondering once again--Where is it from, when will it show up
again??

If you are on a rabbit message board, spread the word. Know 4-H leaders,
pet stores, show secretaries, feedstore owners, extension offices, swap meet
location owners, shelters, rescues, reptile owners/vendors??....spread the
word!

This virus is EXTREMELY tough, hardy, and sticky. Transference is
relatively simple, usually by physical contact with contaminated animals and
their products (feces in particular can have infectious virus for a month!).

We have had four outbreaks since the turn of the millenium; Iowa, then
Utah/Illinois/Idaho (Idaho was the location of a meat truck, the contents of
which were euthanized as a precaution); followed by the third, smaller
outbreak in Flushing, NY. Now we have Indiana/Kentucky.

The owner is being very cooperative in the investigation, and we should all
appreciate his finding this disease, while also empathizing with his losses.

That's the latest updates on information; much of this will go up on the
http://www.showbunny.com site by Monday in a better organized format. :)

Thank you ALL for your attention, assistance, and concern in this matter!
