Ok, so the misdiagnosis was on a ferret, but the advice I need would be the same.

A couple of weeks ago, a friend of mine called me upset because shethought her ferret had adrenal gland disease. It has reallyobvios symptoms, so I went over to have a look. I actuallyhaven't seen her ferret in months and I knew right away she wasright. I recommended she go see my exotics vet because he iswonderful and even called in a favor to get her an appointmentquickly. He ran the tests and came up with a differentdiagnosis, but I didn't agree with him (for the first time ever), so Itold her to see someone else. I sent her to the vet who seesmy dogs and cats and who I use in a pinch because the other guy has areally busy practice and really short hours only 2 evenings aweek. This vet came up with the adrenal disease, but sadly itis too late to treat as both glands are affected.

Anyway, my problem is that this disease has reallyblatantsymptoms and I have no idea how my vet could have missed it.I haven't ever had a problem with him, but in my mind, this is a bigproblem. Should I give him the benefit of the doubt and goback to him, or seek out someone else??

I think your friend should confronthim. She could say something like "My friend really trustsyou and reccommended you to me and you missed this completely, eventhough it was obvious. Could you explain, please?"

The point will be taken.

Also, your vet may very well be specialized in rabbits and know less about ferrets.

The real question is, what test were run and what did they show that made him think it was something else?

She's going to call him, but she is too upsetright now to do it. He has seen my ferrets and diagnosed myBailey with adrenal disease really early in the disease. Heis only an exotics vet, so he is generally good. I knowpeople who take birdsto him and he sees my reptiles, so Ijust don't know. I've also taken all my critters to the othervet she saw, so I may just go to her in the future. She isnicer and has better hours, so maybe she would be better all around.

You know, if he ran tests and they came back withsomething else...... maybe the ferret had two conditions or one thatwas causing other conditions to manifest?

I would find out what tests and all that.... like ed said.

Remember that no one is perfect really. There are going to bemistakes. If you like him, trust that he had a bad situationand find out a bit more before making a quick decision.

Unfortunately even the best vets make mistakes,Ihad a vet highly reccomended by everyone for my horse and he screwed upwhat was a simple procedure to geld him.he let the horse down too hardand now he has permanent nerve damage on his face.I later tearned thewhole thing could have easily been avoided.I was there at the time butdid not have the knowledge then to prevent it.i trusted the vet.bluebird
