Some of you will remember a while back I posted about a rabbit I picked up at a small animal auction. She was very underwieght, had ear mites, sore hocks, etc. and the people selling her had bred her before the auction, hoping to get a couple extra bucks at sale I guess.
Well, today she presented me with eleven fat sassy kits!! They are a really beautiful litter. I thought when I got her that Charity was a standard Rex, that at least is what the sale tag said. I think now she may be a mix breed, though, she has finally gotten her fur back in (just in time to pluck it for her nest!) and that fur just doesn't look Rex to me. I suppose it could just be very poor quality Rex, I don't know. Anyway, I have pics of the kits. About half of the litter is white, the other half looks like blues and lilacs. Here's a question: Do lilacs/blues have white bellies? Cause these guys do. I have never had either one of those colors in my Mini Rex, so I wasn't sure.
If anyone is looking for a baby bun, these guys will be looking for homes in eight weeks! LOL

Well, when I got her at the auction, the sale tag said she had been bred, but I wasn't sure if she would have taken, considering her condition and the fact that she was still lactating from her last litter. I was sooo mad at those people... She wouldn't let me palpate her, either, so I just kinda went, well, this is when she is supposed to be due, I will give her a nest just in case!

Congrats on the babies and my compliments to you. I saw Charity Saturday and she lookslike a new woman!!! She is a cutie and I am sure you will find great homes for them.

Love to see updated pics of Charity. It was so sweet of you to take that poor girl in. :great:

(I wonder who the daddy was? Guess we'llhave a better idea in a few weeks, huh).

Kudos to you for giving Charity a safe and happy place to have her babies.

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D (<- 12 smilies, one for each baby and one for mom ;))

Yay! I just love babies :)....You must take lots of pictures of the cuties as they grow up. You and Charity should have your hands full when those eleven babies get bigger!

Congratulations!

There has been a sad turn of events. When I was doing my evening bunny check last night, I noticed that Charity was acting very jumpy. I decided to check the kits. They have all gone over the Rainbow Bridge. I don't know why. I think they might have gotten too hot, because she covered them in a thick layer of fur and hay, and it was around 90 degrees yesterday.
Things like this make me so sad and so angry at the same time. If those irresponsible idiots hadn't even bred her, she wouldn't have had the stress of pregnancy, and the loss of the babies. I can tell she is upset, she actually let me pet her yesterday and this morning, she's never let me do that before. It makes me wonder how can people who care about animals ever win against those who don't? It seems like those of us who care are so outnumbered.

Aww...poor sweetie...and poor you.

I know what you mean. It really doesn't seem fair, but rest assured that we that care do do some good, and that's the thing we have to rely on is that, though it seems miniscule at times like these, it does make a difference. You made a difference in your beautiful Charity's life, and she will live a full, happy life because of you. :)

Here is a flower for each of the babies, and a special one for Mama. Binky happy, little babies...our hearts are with you!:group

Oh no! I'm so sorry. That was an awful lot of kits, especially with her being malnourished and just off her previous litter when she was bred.

Binky free, little guys.

:bigtears:

I just thought of this-should I be worried about her getting mastitis? I know it will probably take a couple of days for her milk to dry up, is there any special way I should be feeding her?

That's so sad...It must have been terribly shocking to find all of the babies dead! :bigtears:

It depends on how much milk she's producing and if there's anything she could bang herself on. Watch her temperature.

They treat it with doses of penicillin for about three to five days. Also, reduce feed concentrates. All of this, of course, is to be done IF she gets it. I don't think there's anything you can do feed wise to prevent it though.

Ellie

Awww, I am so sorry. You did the best you could :hug2 :tears2:

Binkie free, little ones...
