I was going into Mickey D's to get dinner tonightand i found a baby bunny laying in the grass. Had to be a few weeks oldbecause it just opened its eyes, it still had little peices of junk inits eyes. I called animal control and they are going to go look for ittomorrow- Dad said i couldnt bring it home because it was wild but itwas so tiny and looked helpless. Did i do the right thing by leavingit? MORAL DALEMA!!

The best thing to do was to leave it where youfound it. If the eyes are open, it will do fine on it's ownunless it is ill (which it may have been). It can be verydifficult to properly care for a wild animal, so this should be left towildlife experts.

The local wildlife rescue should be contacted if you believe a wildanimal is in distress -- people must remember that it is illegal tokeep game animals in your possession without the proper permits.

It can be very devastating to someone who has bonded with an animal, only to have the game commission remove it from your possession (andslap you with a fine).

I think you did theright thing too. It may have been sick and it would have broken yourheart to have brought it home and have it die, and on top ofthat take the chance of exposing all of your buns to whatever theillness was.

Sometimes Animal Control isntvery helpfull is correct and they can beawfuly cold and rude also , Butfor the most part Hon , theyare a decent bunch of people , moreharried than most would ever guess ,you didthe right thing , psst do what idid sign up to become a wild liferescue person , I will betaking courses soon to becomefully qualified , I have a temporary permitto do wild life rescue andin six months will befully certified ! , Its a thought ,something for future reference , besidesi think you would do an awsomejob.

I've read of and have talked to people who haveclaimed to raise cottontails after finding them much like youdescribed. It would appear it is a difficult proposition atbest. You probably gave the bun its best chance at making itby leaving it for mom to deal with.

You get myvote.

Yep, my mum found some 2 week old cottontails (actually my little brothers did) and raised them.

Here's a pic with the founders, and you can see they don't have their eyes open yet. (The bunnies, that is.)

Here's one when they are older:

But if the bun you found was as big as those two in that pic, then youdid the right thing! Rabbits are very adaptable when it comesto reproduction! ;)

You bet you did the right thing, Danielle. I'm sure it wasvery hard on you to not go over and pick the little one up and take ithome, but rest assured, you did exactly what you should've done and themost compassionate for the babe.

GoodJob!

Hope all is well with you these days.
