Hmm, I've always wondered if it was just me but does anyone else have trouble when deciding who to keep/who to sell when it comes time to cull? I remember when I raised DwarfHotots, I had the ugliest, DQ, poor typed doe produce Grand Champions and in fact her son won at Nationals....isn't that so weird???! She was hideous looking, bless her heart!I almost sold her as a pet, I guess genetics are like apair of dice-you just never know.

So ever since I started in Polish I've wondered if I should look for a proven brood doe no matter the type, just has good bloodlines-or- look for one with nice type regardless of bloodlines. What do you do? Are you more lenient on type if it's a brood animal or do you keep according to breed standard only? I'm not culling yet, but one day when I have a few litters I know I'm going to have asome tough decisionson my hands.:?

Buck wise its type all the time. My does I am pretty lenient on. I have 3 BUD in my shed and all produce me some very tidy and some pet only. But the ones they produce as show quality are usually crackers :). The chin litter I had that you posted in was one of my BUD's and she has given me this time that little nice one that Ann is getting and 2 not so nice so they will go as pets.

if i were you I would go for bloodlines every time with the doe's and type with the buck. :)if you get a good type doe with a good bloodline then even better:D

My big BUD does are the best producers. I have one doe that is homely as sin but throws the nicest typey babies. Her daughter was just youth BOV castor at mini-rex nationals last week and two of her other daughters placed very well. She is very well bred and a very good mother. When I decide to keep a new brood doe I usually keep a large doe with good bloodlines. The small show does are usually sold because they don't usually produce as well as the larger does and have a harder time kindling.

You're so right Roger about the ugly ones being the best producers. I remember being so frustrated with my nice show doe, she never could keep a litter-that girl would eat every one of them.:X

Thanks Polly for the info, your right about the buck being nice typed. The baby that won at nationals out ofmy BUD, his dad was very nice. Obviously he took after him.:pThis is interesting reading about what kind of results you both have had, thanks so much!

I agree. My Flemish bucks have to have good type, no DQ's, good color. My does, I'm more lenient on, especially with the blue Flemish. (Since the blues are so uncommon, I'll keep a doe with any quality that will improve the line.)

With my Mini Rex, I also have seen some of our best Show rabbits come from the BUDs. I do prefer a nicely typed doe, even if she is too big... I will always overlook weight for better type in a brood doe.

What about a Mini Rex buck that has great type but is too big? Arthur is like that, his type is great but he is almost five pounds! It's not fat, either, he has a big frame. And he isn't a mix breed or anything, he came from a well-known reputable breeder.

LOL! I have to admit, two of our nicest Grand Champion does came out of our Chunky Monkey... a 5.25 lb. broken blue buck with the sweetest personality. He has 4 legs of his own, but we never got him registered while he wasyounger (and smaller!)and we couldn't get his weight down enough afterwards.

And the funny thing is he doesn't eat much at all!

My bucks are almost all grand champions. I am very picky about the bucks that I keep to show and use for breeding. I do have one buck that is big. He was one of the first bucks that I bought and was shown 3 times before he went overweight. All 3 times he won BOB. I just make sure that I breed him to does with the dwarfing gene and I get nice babies from him.
