I thought I would ask you guys for suggestions. I know that its sorta of pathetic that i'm 20 years old and have never had a real job, but that's the sad truth.

I've been very very busy with school / university my whole life and to be honest my parents just sort of made it so I never had to work. They went as far as to disallow / discourage me from working in high school.

I've done internships and volunteer work before, but that was a few years ago and I'm a little uncomfortable putting those places are references because it was so long ago.

So now I'm trying to get...ANY job. Its probably going to be in some kind of animal care or retail but I can't get ANYTHING!

You think three years of college at a really great school would mean something...I mean i'm a molecular biology major, obviously I can handle a cash register. But no...

Does anyone have any suggestions?? I'm starting to freak out a little, I need to make some money! The job market around here is very competitive and there isn't much available.

Do you have a professor or adviser at school that would be willing to act as a reference? What about a family friend?
I'm in a similar position to you as far as not having held a job. I did a lot of volunteer work throughout high school and used those as references for my summer job.

I don't think it has to be a "real job". Have you babysat for anyone? Helped with someones pet? Anything you have done to show you are responsible and show up on time.

There is a girl who helped me give my rabbits meds at home who just used me as a reference. It wasn't a real job, but I was more then happy to give her a reference.

There is a girl I worked with over 3 years ago who is now looking for a new job and put me as a reference. I don't mind. I am sure her work ethic is the same now as it was 3 years ago, she was a great worker. So though it has been awhile since you interned and volunteered, I would call or email some people you might know from that and see if they would be okay with you putting them as a reference.

I also agree with Christina to look at advisors and professors. May be even a counselor.

Good luck!

I agree. I have often used references that are several years old. I understand that you may feel uncomfortable but it will actually look better for you if employers see that you still have a standing relationship with previous bosses.

Do you have a landlord? Roommate? Or maybe someone who worked along side you in a school project who can vouch for your character? And of course someone from one of your volunteer placements would be perfect.

I would avoid listing friends, or even family friends, in my experience employers frown on it. If you absolutely must then fudge the lines a little, wen they ask for your relationship don't say "friend".

There will be someone out there who will give you a chance, we were all in your position at some point. Good luck!

(ps. I've been doing retail since I was 16. So if you have any questions you think I could help you with, PM me!)
