Intro
Hi,
My names Renee. Me and my son are totally new to the rabbit scene. I have a long story and lots questions so please bear with me. Since my story is so long I'll mark the questions with a star, in case you don't want to read my whole story you can just read the questions and maybe help me. And please help, I want to do the right thing by our new bunny.

Unfortunately, we have just recently lost both out cats. Long story. Each cat was a pet to each of my sons. My sons are older. One a teenage, and the other a preteen. Yikes,"> I know. My older son chose to get a kitten, my younger son chose to get a rabbit. Our plan was to purchase a bunny, just ready to be away from its mother. That's not what we did. The rabbit I purchase it suppose to be 5 months old. I'm thinking he is older, and I'm hoping you guys can help me with that. Another thing I need help with is if you guys can tell me what breed he is. I will post pictures.

Max and how we got him.
A little about Max. (The rabbit). I have been looking on craigslist and other classified sites to find a bunny. I found several, but they were either to far for me to drive, or they weren't ready to have a home yet. I found a listing on craigslist advertising that a 5 month old dwarf bunny needed a home. The girl was selling him and the cage for cheap. In the ad it stated that he was already litter box trained, and around cats.

I have done my research on rabbits, and it doesn't sound hard to litter train a rabbit, but I thought the work is already done, and he's young, and we just got a kitten, so hopefully the kitten and rabbit will get along, so I went to go check him out. This was last night (Sunday the 15th) around 6p.

When I got there the girl called him Lola, so I asked, is it a girl? Logical thinking right? She said no, why it had a girl name was because when they purchased it they were told it was a girl, but when they went to the vet to get it's nails trimmed the vet told them it was a boy, but they still called it Lola. Well I couldn't have a boy named Sue, so that's how he got the name Max.

Food, What I'm doing and is it right?
Now I've read different things, and right now going with what sounds right and health. I've heard to stay away from the mixed rabbit food,(*is this true?) and the girl was feeding him this, luck-a-ly, his food was very close to gone (only one dish left) so I change his food. Tomorrow he will get the unmixed food. I have also read that they should not have the yogart treats, or so called rabbit crackers. He has both, I don't know if I should give them to him. *What do you all think? I don't know if they were giving him greens, they only said they were giving him carrots from time to time. Since I changed his food, I thought I should wait a few days before giving him greens just to make sure the food agrees with him. * Do you guys agree? Once again, I have read lots of things and they are all different. The food I bought is Timothy Hay based, and Protein 13%, fat 1.5%, Crude fiber (min) 18%, crude fiber (max) 23%, calcium (min) .3% and max .8%. None of this is what I read as a recommendation. *Is this a good food? He of course is getting his Timothy Hay and fresh water. And pieces of wood (bought from the pet store to chew on.

Toys
He has some toys in his cage. A large cat ball with a bell inside, a small rubber ball (very soft squeaker) and a toilet paper roll. *Are these good?

I don't know if I did the right thing
Last night when I got home, I placed Max's cage in the living room, I think this is where we are going to keep him, and got his cage comfortable. But anyways, I did not let him out, I let him get use to our smells. Before I went to bed I covered him up so the cat would not bother him all night. *Was covering him ok? I uncovered him in the morning, got ready for work, gave him fresh food, water and hay, and went to work. When I got home at 7:30p, I opened his door. I'm think now I should have not done that, I'll explain why I think I shouldn't have done that in a sec. He stayed in his cage for about another 5 to 10 mins. and came out. Our cat (still a kitten) would go up to him and try to play. George (the cat) was being to rough, Max hopped back in his cage. George did not follow (good thing, I wouldn't let him in there even if he did). I put George in the bath room and closed the door, when I came out I notice Max was out of his cage again. He was in my room, I just watched him. After he explored the house for a while, I let George out of the bath room. At first things were good, but then George was playing rough again, so I tried to refrain George. Max kept coming up to him, so I let George go again. They danced around each other sniffing butts, and jumping all over each other. At first it looked fine, but then it looked like they were being mean to each other, so I broke it up. Max was pooping all over the house, and the girl told me he was litter box trained. *Was he pooping just to mark his place? Plus once I placed Max on my lap, and was letting George and Max sniff each other with out all the playing and roughness. Max bit my knee, did not leave a mark. *Did he do this cuz he's still scared of me, or was it too early for the cat and the rabbit to be out together? Max was out for only about an hour and a half, then I put him back in his cage, and put his cage in my room. By letting Max out of his cage today is where I think I made a huge mistake. I'm really nervous. I want this to work out. See my son is not even home right now. He's away at camp and won't be back until Saturday. He knows I got the bunny, I hate to have ruined things before he gets home and sees his pet. *Did I make a mistake by letting him out to early?

What Breed is he?
Here are some pics. *Can anyone tell me what breed he is?

Let me welcome you to Rabbits Online, my name is Dave and I am a moderator on the forum. So if I can be of any help please let me know. This is a terrific website for rabbits and their slaves, not only is it very active but also friendly. I am so glad you’re here and I know you will enjoy it.

Many bunny's recommend their slaves to this site so we may learn of others methods to keeping our furry masters happy.

Yougurt treats are fine, just like any treat use to reward behavior or as a once every other day is o.k. Bunny's digestive systems are sensitive and changes in food can not always give some tummy troubles. If he is eating/drinking/peeing and pooping o.k. he's fine. Give dark greens, no head lettuce, romaine, kale, parsley, turnip greens are good ones. The food sounds fine, another thing you can do is give him part of a phone book to shred up, a cardboard box to chew on too.

I would ditch the squeeky toy as this is very similiar to the sounda a rabbit in trouble makes. Baby toys are also good, my rabbits like to play with the stacking cups and baby keys. Rabbits nip for several reasons a couple of which are, fear and you stopped petting and they want you to resume. You didn't let him out too early, the little poos areterritorial andlitter box trained rabbits will still do that.

If you everhave a sick bunny, please post in The Infirmary and include your rabbit's age, breed and health history as well diet and output details leading up to the problem.

I have listed some links I thought you might find interesting:
