I can't decide whether or not to sell Santiago. I kind of want to hang onto him and breed him to my two does that I'm getting from New York soon. I love his bone & his head. He's long though.
Please help my decide.
I know he is overposed and not really posed. But he refused. I just don't know what to do :/

You have a litter out of him, right?

Keep one of his babies, so you still have his blood to hang on to.

IMO, you can find much better out there and he's, bottom line, not a hugely fantastic show animal. Don't take it personally- it'll be easy to find better and improve faster with a better herd buck, though.

I do have a litter out of him, but he was bred to his sister, & she is disgusting. So I don't think the kits will turn out that nice. I kind of wanted to try to breed him to my new does from the states.

Gah. I don't know what to do :/

Something a good friend once told me.. "If you like a rabbit, even if you don't know why, and someone else tells you they don't like him, but you just like him for some reason, keep him for a while longer, and see what happens." Maybe he will produce great babies with one of the does you get!! Do you have pictures of the does?

Well his baby looks really nice to me..although I'm not the best with min lops. But if he produced nice babies with Harmony, which seems to be the case, then keep him and breed him to Emma or Teaspoon. Emma looks nice, and it will be nice to see Teaspoon when her pic is there. I think breeding to Harmony was a good choice.. the baby is really cute!!

Thank you ! Amaretto (I assume that is who you are looking at) was my pick of the litter. :)

I don't think any of us can decide what to do for you.

Does this buck compliment your does? Will he improve their type? Does he have something to offer your herd as a whole?

You definitely want to be answering "yes" to all those questions when choosing a herd buck. Also, follow the 3 strikes rule. If you can find 3 faults, he's out because you can find better. Your herd buck should be the strongest animal in your herd, so don't settle! :)

I agree with this but I would wait until you have the does in your hands before you make your choice.

I've never heard this before - but what a GREAT piece of advice. I plan to write this down somewhere so I can pass it on to others.

I'd say sell, but then I think about my recent mistake.

I sold this one buck just because of his personality. He chose me to hate. Loved my parents, loved his previous owner, and just loved who we left with. But every time I picked up him, he lunged at neck, kicked and fought. Just a nasty bun.

Not to mention, he was rather large to show. (And ounce or two over the weight limit, and he had to be /starved/ to get him down to 2 lbs 8 oz. Not something I ever wanted to do.)

So I bred him to one girl, and sold him. Now I found out that he bred to two girls (on accident. XD), and I couldn't be more pleased. I really wish I would have kept him and put up with his attitude. His babies all have his great, huge head and bold eyes. I'm kicking myself over the fact that I petted him out... And that I lost the people's email address.

Just be sure you're ready for him to move on, when you sell him. It's a horrid feeling not having a rabbit that ended siring amazing animals, have those all be called for, and not be able to get a repeat.
